The Saab 9-4X prototype was officially presented to potential buyers at the Detroit Auto Show in 2008 under the name Saab 9-4X Concept. In the product line, he was replacing the larger and more technically conservative Saab 9-7X SUV. Serial production started in 2011 in the Mexican city of Ramos Arispe together with the platform Cadillac SRX. Already in November 2011, in the midst of negotiations with potential buyers, Saab GM announced the suspension of 9-4X production. GM technical patents used in the construction and production of the model, which GM feared violations, have become a stumbling block, which in fact left Saab without means of existence, since all Saab R & D products since GM's entry in 1990 were GM patents, and a significant part of them were product of other GM design centers and was used in other cars of the concern, including in the same market niche. Probably the production of 9-4X closed permanently.
