History
After several years of work on other online and offline collaborative sustainability projects, Lonnie Grafman launched Appropedia in April 2006, with a special focus on applied technology. Aaron Antrim and Gabriel Krause helped him in deciding to use MediaWiki as an engine for Appropedia. Kurt Beckman then joined Appedia later in 2006.
Contact with WikiGreen in December 2006 [5] led to a quick decision to join forces. It was decided to use the name Appropedia. This merger led to a rapid growth of content, including due to permissions from various authors, part of the content was taken from CD3WD (CDs for the 3rd World - CD for third world countries). [6]
Since then, Appropedia has included content from various sites:
- The International Rivers Network has given permission for several pages of valuable content.
- Practical Action allowed to take more than 100 articles.
- Demotech , an organization in the Netherlands , has created many pages.
- It was merged with the Village Earth wiki in March 2007. [7] This was the original application technology wiki.
- The How To Live Wiki, launched by Vinay Gupta (Vinay Gupta), many materials were included in Appropedia in March 2007, and Vinay joined the Appropedia team.
- The Sgoals wiki, focused on sustainable business practices, entered in mid-2007.
- The Students for Global Sustainability Wiki merged in January 2008.
- CCAT (The Campus Center for Appropriate Technology - the campus-center of applied technologies) was taken by Appropedia to promote the pages of its projects in April 2008.
In 2012, the Semantic MediaWiki extension was added.
