Biography

Thomas Conrad Porter was born on January 22, 1822 in the city of Alexandria in Pennsylvania in the family of John and Mary Porter. Since 1836 he studied at Lafayette College, which he subsequently graduated with a bachelor's degree. In 1843 he received a master's degree.

From 1844 to 1849, Porter was a pastor in Presbyterian churches in Huntingdon , Monticchiello and Reading . In 1849, Thomas Conrad became a professor of chemistry, zoology and botany at Marshall College in Merersburg . From 1877 to 1884, Porter again preached in Easton .

On April 27, 1901, Thomas Conrad Porter passed away.

Porter has been a member of many US scientific societies. He was one of the founders and first president of the Linnaeus Society of Lancaster County.

Thomas Porter's main herbarium has been kept at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia (PH) since 1914. Most of it was destroyed in a fire in 1897.
