General Information
The Uruguayan competition was part of the autumn soil series of the APR main tour, on the eve of the 1993 season transformed from a series of tournaments in Brazil for financial reasons. That year, one of three such competitions moved to Argentina , and in 1994 Uruguay visited the top division of men's professional tennis. Both competitions belonged to the basic category of ATP tour tournaments - ATP World . The prize pool of the Montevideo tournament for the second year of its existence amounted to $ 203 thousand with a tournament grid designed for 32 singles and 16 pairs.
Attempts to preserve the autumn soil series by moving the venue of the tournaments were unsuccessful: both the Argentine and Uruguayan tournaments ceased to exist by 1996 and the Asia-Pacific Region had to redraw the calendar, postponing two other tournaments of its own in late fall - in Mexico City and Bogota .
Failure with the competition of the main round did not scare away the local organizers: in 1998 they bought a license for the ATP Challenger category tournament : this competition lasted four seasons, after which it was closed. In 2005, the Montevideo Challenger resumed.
Winners and Finalists
Over the two years of the tournament, the dominance of Spanish tennis players was indicated. Spain was represented by three of the four finalists in singles and two of the four pairs in the finals in doubles. The Spaniard Alberto Berasategui made it to the finals twice and won once; in doubles, the same result was shown by Sergio Casal and Emilio Sanchez . The hosts of the tournament were represented in the finals by only one player - Marcelo Filippini , who won the doubles in the first year of the tournament.
