History
Origin of title
The name Totma most likely comes from the Finno-Ugric languages (Komi “Tod” - “a damp place overgrown with spruces and bushes”, “-ma” - “earth”) [4] . This point of view adheres to the official science. However, toponymic legends , explaining another origin of the name, are active in the city. One of them says that Peter I, on his first visit to Totma, said: “This is not a city - that is darkness”. However, the incorrectness of this legend is confirmed by the fact that its present name of the city was worn long before the Petrine era [4] . According to another version of the legend, these words allegedly belong to Ivan the Terrible . Another legend says that “Totma” is translated as “city conjuring water”, which is allegedly explained by the fact that the Sukhona River changes its direction twice a year (as it originates in Kubensky Lake , and when in the flood the water level the river is higher than in the lake, in the upper reaches of the river the direction of the current changes to the opposite and for some time the river flows towards the lake from which it flows) [5] .
Early history
The founding date of Tot'ma is considered to be the year 1137 , on the basis of the letter of the Novgorod prince Svyatoslav Olgovich , where the Toshma pogost is mentioned among the lands subject to tribute [6] . Previously, historians believed that this pogost was located 15 kilometers downstream from the modern city [7] ; Now these data are questioned, because the exact date of the founding of the city in the Middle Prisukhne can hardly be clarified [8] . Nevertheless, an old settlement at the mouth of the Old Totma River existed in the 13th — 14th centuries [7] .
In the XV century, part of the Totmichs, apparently, moved to a new place, 2 km north of the modern city. It is there, as scientists believe, that the inhabitants of local villages were the first in Russia to master the processes of deep salt production [6] . The first guide to the deep drilling of salt wells, created in Russia, has reached our days: “Painting how to conceive to make a new pipe in a new place,” written by master Semyon Sablin [9] . A new administrative center of the volost, Usolye Totemskoe , grew up around the saltworks built by the inhabitants of the villages of Uglitskaya and Galitskaya (on the banks of the Kovda , Lyapunhi (Lyapunka) and Solonukha rivers) . From this time until the 18th century, Totma remained one of the largest salt cities and at one time was also called Posad Sol Totemskaya or Sol Totemskaya, by analogy with the Vychegda Salt, Galician Salt, etc. Owned salt industries first known Vologda monasteries, including Spaso -Prilutsky , as well as the richest salt peasants. This continued until the right to duty-free production of salt and trade in it was acquired by the Savior-Sumorin monastery , which significantly expanded its salt-holdings. Soon other merchants began to arrive on the Totemsky land. Repeatedly salt saltworks were subjected to various devastations. In 1539–1541, the city was severely devastated by the Kazan Tatars [7] [10] . Apparently, it was precisely in the period after the departure of Kazan that the construction of a fortified fortress began on the highest of the coastal hills on the left bank of the Sukhona . Totemsky fortress-fortress was a powerful defensive structure, which repelled the attack of a runaway detachment of Poles in the Time of Troubles , which, however, plundered local war [7] [11] . It was around this fortress that the new suburb began to grow, reminiscent of its modern center by its borders. Tot'ma is fairly accurately indicated on the map of Asia from the third part of the Atlas of the Mercator , released in 1595 [12] . There is also a legend that Ivan IV the Terrible visited the city and allegedly even had time to rest on a halt near the city, which later created the notion of Gosudarev Lug in urban toponymy. But there is no documentary evidence of the presence of Ivan the Terrible in Tot'ma [13] . A significant fact in the history of the city of the XVI century was the foundation of Theodosius Sumorin, a monk of the Vologda Spaso-Prilutsky Monastery, a large cloister near Totma, which was called the Transfiguration of the Savior . Soon to the new monastery, many land holdings, as well as salt mines, were ceded. The founder of the monastery Theodosius Sumorin in 1798 was canonized. The relics of Theodosius, extracted in 1919 from the crayfish of the monastery cathedral, spent most of the 20th century in the Lazarevsky temple of Vologda , and in the 1990s they returned to Totma, to the existing Christmas church .

Totma under the Romanovs
The 17th century becomes the heyday for Totma, as well as for other cities on the North Dvina waterway . Virtually all foreign trade of the Russian state , due to the lack of access to the Baltic Sea , was carried out through Vologda , Totmu, Veliky Ustyug and Arkhangelsk , which contributed to the appearance of Totmu yards and representative offices of foreign merchants and trade missions. In just one year, from 500 to 1000 ships passed through the city [6] . The trade value of the city, which has increased due to the further development of salt mines, allowed Totme to be one of the richest and most significant cities of the Russian kingdom . According to the census books of the first quarter of the XVII century, in the old Totemsky posad on the Kovda and Lyapunka rivers there were 8 varnits, in which the brines contained from 5 to 6% of salt. Salt production reached 200 thousand pounds per year [14] .
Totma visited Peter I three times [6] . There is a legend that the king, while visiting the Totma breweries, personally tested the work of the salt maker on himself and pulled the brine tub out of the well [7] . Peter was the last of the Russian rulers who personally visited the city. Soon, the commercial and economic importance of Totma began to fall due to the founding of St. Petersburg and the complete cessation of trade on the Sukhona-Dvina route , as well as the discovery of new sources of salt (in particular, the salt lakes Elton and Baskunchak ) in southern Russia. But totem merchants were able to find new sources of income and ensure the city no less impressive economic prosperity. In the second half of the 18th century, a total of expeditions to the east — to Siberia, to the Far East, and to the shores of the Americas — were carried out by the Totmichians — Kholodilovs, Panovs, Cherepanovs, and a number of others. Companies of Totemsky merchants outfitted about 20 expeditions into the Pacific Ocean - this is more than companies of Moscow , Vologda and Greatustan merchants together. That is why Totma is called the city of navigators . During these expeditions geographical discoveries were recorded, recorded by science in 1755, maps of a number of islands were made. These expeditions exported 1/5 of the entire fur produced in the Americas for half a century - a record figure among Russian cities [6] . Fur trade brought tangible profits; so, with the money raised in Siberia, the Totem merchant-navigators had the opportunity to build richly decorated and large enough temples for such a small town: Entrance to Jerusalem, Trinity, Rozhdestvensky. In 1785, Empress Catherine II adopted a decree on giving Totme a coat of arms with a black fox on a golden field: “as a sign that the inhabitants of this city catch these animals in fishing” [6] . Totmichi proved to be active participants of the Russian-American company , mastered the expanses of the Pacific Ocean , discovered a number of Aleutian and Commander Islands [6] . Totmich Ivan Kuskov on the coast of Northern California near Bodega Bay in 1812, Fort Ross Fortress was founded, which became the most southerly point of Russian America .

In the second half of the XIX century, Totma gradually became an ordinary patriarchal county town. Salt industry in Totma and Ledengsky lost some of their importance, largely due to the discovery of the large salt lakes Elton and Baskunchak in the south of the country, as well as the secularization of monastic lands conducted by Catherine II , which resulted in the local monasteries and Vologda monasteries being denied the right to engage salt production. Gradually salt pans passed into the hands of local salt miners and treasury. By 1915, salt production was already oriented towards local consumption [15] .
Urban temples continue to be built, education is being developed: a higher primary school, a women's gymnasium, a spiritual and a real school are being opened. At the beginning of the 20th century, Tot'ma was considered one of the “educational capitals” of the Vologda province . The Petrovskaya craft school, opened at the expense of a local native, merchant N. I. Tokarev, enjoyed special success. The aim of the school was to educate children from peasant families in the manufacture of toys and household items. The school had several workshops: metalworking, turning, carpentry, tin, basket, toy. In 1905, at the international exhibition in Liege ( Belgium ), the school was awarded the Grand Prix. In the press, Totma was called Russian Nuremberg , the city of toy-makers [16] .
In addition, Tot'ma continued to remain a place of political exile since the 17th century. Especially a lot of exiles passed through the city in the second half of the XIX - early XX centuries. The writer-populist, publicist P. L. Lavrov , who began work on his famous Historical Letters, the writer-democrat N. V. Shelgunov , the ethnographer and folklorist G. N. Potanin , future USSR Commissar for Foreign Affairs V. V. M. Molotov (Scriabin). In 1876, writer V. G. Korolenko stayed here for a short time, later describing his personal impressions of the city in The Story of My Contemporary, one of the chapters of which is called “The Stop in Totma”. Also in Tot'ma I stayed for some time, moving from Solvychegodsk to Vologda, I. V. Dzhugashvili (Stalin) [7] . But the most detailed memories of totem exile were left by A. V. Lunacharsky , who lived here in 1903-1904.
My totem memories are even more pleasant in Vologda ... Tot'ma is a charming, patterned town, with churches in the rococo style , on the banks of a huge river , behind which dark forests stretch. Not far from the city lies a monastery , where you can ride in a sleigh through silver winter forests and where they give bread, kvass and soup, which I have never eaten before or after ... I remember Totma as some kind of winter tale, some kind of scenery for "Snow Maiden".
- A.V. Lunacharsky. "From Vologda Memories" [17]
Soviet power
"That city is green ..."
(1969, excerpt)
That city is green and quiet
Pleasantly deserted and deaf.
Worthy, without too much hype,
Sings like a village cock
On the square of the main ... Wagon
Sometimes rumbles through the bridge,
And where there is a ravine and a birch,
Crowded people at the kiosk
And pulls out of the cup juice,
And flies fly in nettles,
Blissful in the summer heat ...
Well there is more pleasant, happier
Is it still on earth?
I'll take a look at the green courtyard -
And immediately please the eye
Earthly bows to each other
People facing the courtyard. [18]
After the abolition of the Vologda province , and with it the Totemsky district in 1929, the city became the center of the newly formed Totemsky district - first of the Northern Territory (1929-1936), then the Northern Region (1936-1937), and then - separated from its composition of the Vologda Region (since 1937). Industrialization processes have affected the city a little. A power station was built and food and forestry production expanded, but the orientation of the economy towards agriculture remained. The struggle of militant atheists with religion ended with the demolition of more than half of the city’s churches, the conversion of the Church of the Entry into Jerusalem and the winery, and the premises of Spaso-Sumorin monastery into a forestry technical school [11] .
The future poet Nikolai Mikhailovich Rubtsov studied at the forestry technical school for several years (1950-1952), who had previously been brought up in the orphanage of the village of Nikolskoye, Totemsky District , and later repeatedly came to Totma and considered these places to be their spiritual homeland [19] . In 1985, the monument to N. M. Rubtsov on the bank of the Sukhona was inaugurated [20] . The revival of the historical traditions of the city began only in the 1970s and is closely connected with the work of local historian S. M. Zaitsev . SM Zaitsev was “re-opened” the history of totem navigation and the phenomenon of totem cartouches (“stamps”), thanks to his vigorous activity, the historical center of Totma was protected from demolition by the “ Lengiprogor ” project [21] .
Modern Period
The 1990s became a difficult time for the city to close a number of enterprises (forestry, furniture factory, flax factory) [13] . Nevertheless, despite the financial difficulties, it was at this time that the Church of the Assumption was restored, the Church of Antiquities Museum and the Museum of Mariners were opened, new ideas for the development of tourism were opened. In the 2000s, a fitness center, a new building of the youth center Totma, a hotel and entertainment complex Varnitsy were built in Totma, the building of the city bus station was reconstructed, turned into a bus station. A monument to Russian explorers and navigators is solemnly opened on the central square. Since 2001, traditionally, on the second Saturday of August, the Preobrazhenskaya Fair has been held, and the city has been accepted into the new Hanseatic Society (Hanseatic League).
Planning and development
Totma is located on several low hills on the left bank of the Sukhona and partially on the flat lowland part on the right bank. The layout of the streets has been preserved since the master plan bestowed by Catherine II . The city is compact enough; The historical center, in which the main monuments of architecture and other sights are located, is located on the territory bounded by Sukhona from the south, Pesye Denga - from the west, Kirov Street - from the north and Dmitrievsky Creek - from the east. The Totemsky site of ancient settlement (Sobornaya Gora) is located in this part, the main city square is the Trading, city market, 4 of 5 Totemsky museums, the main shops. The rest of Totma is divided into a number of small neighborhoods, which are former settlements and villages: Korepovo - in the east, Fetiha and Zelenskaya Sloboda - in the south-west. A large village of Varnitsy is adjacent to Totme from the north, nominally being part of the Pyatovsky municipal district of Totemsky district , but, in fact, merging with the city features. In the right-bank part of Totma there are several streets, a recreation area and a city cemetery.

Geography
Climate

Ecology
Culture
Museums
- Музей церковной старины , экспонирующий в бывшем Успенском храме деревянную скульптуру, икону и предметы церковного обихода из храмов бывшего Тотемского уезда;

- Дом-музей Ивана Кускова , основателя крепости Форт Росс в Северной Калифорнии, самого знаменитого из тотемских мореходов;
- Комплекс Спасо-Суморина монастыря , представляющий открытое хранение фондов на территории бывшего Спасо-Суморина монастыря ;
Музеи Тотьмы | ||||||||||
|
- Музей детства и семьи в посёлке Царева ;
Religion

- Спасо-Преображенский собор (без куполов, в руинированном состоянии);
- Башня ограды монастыря (в руинированном состоянии);
- Успенская церковь (развалины);
- Настоятельский корпус (музей «Открытое хранение фондов»);
- Корпус братских келий (в руинированном состоянии);
- Корпус братских келий (гостиница «Монастырские кельи»);

- Памятник русским мореходам и землепроходцам на центральной площади, представляющий собой ладью, на парусе которой видны очертания тотемских храмов;
- Памятный знак «Шестидесятая параллель»;
- Памятник И. А. Кускову ;
- Памятник живописцу Ф. М. Вахрушову ;
Infrastructure
Transportation System
Road Network
Tot'ma is a major transportation hub in the eastern part of the Vologda region. The city is located at the intersection of two highways of regional significance: P7 ( Chekshino - Tot'ma - Nikolsk ) and the Sukhonsky tract (Tot'ma - Nyuksenitsa - Veliky Ustyug ). According to the roads, there is an access to the federal highway M8 "Kholmogory" ( Moscow - Yaroslavl - Vologda - Arkhangelsk ) and P157 ( Uren - Sharya - Nikolsk - Kotlas ). The roads of regional importance connect Totma with the northern ( Seredskaya , Moseevo ) and southern ( Veliky Dvor , Nikolskoye , Gremyachiy ) parts of the district.
Public Transport
Thanks to the developed road network, from Totma it is possible to leave daily for Vologda (more than 12 public transport trips per day, not including private fixed-route taxis), as well as to Velikiy Ustyug , Babushkin village , Nikolsk , Tarnogsky Gorodok , Kichmengsky Gorodok , Nyuksenitsa , Kadnikov , Cherepovets . The bus station is located in the northern part of the city, half a kilometer from the center (Privokzalny Square, near the Northern Lane).
Urban public transport as such is completely absent, although there are two suburban routes to the settlements of Sovetsky and Ust-Yedenga, which make a number of stops within the city (the cost of travel in the city is 3-12 rubles). There are several taxi dispatching services. The cost of travel within the city limits at the moment is 50 rubles.
Other modes of transport
There is no railway within the city, the nearest station is Vologda . The project of the broad-gauge railway that existed in the 1930s ( Galich - Soligalich -Tot'ma- Velsk ) was abandoned due to the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War and it was not started anymore [7] ; and the Pyatovsky narrow-gauge railway , built since the 1950s, which was 12 km from the city, was finally dismantled in 2006 [61] . There is currently no passenger traffic on the Sukhona . It is possible to hire a pleasure boat, pre-organized rafting on catamarans or kayaks.
Air transport ceased to exist in the city by the end of the 1990s, the territory of the former aerodrome was built up, and there are no prerequisites for its revival.
Housing and communal services
The housing and communal services of Tot'ma are represented by enterprises providing the engineering infrastructure of the city: housing maintenance, heat supply, water supply, electricity supply, gas supply, as well as land improvement and garbage disposal. These enterprises include MUP Vodokanal, Fides LLC, Totemsky Branch of Vologda Electric Grid, Totemsky Branch of Vologdaenergo, etc.
The main source of water supply is the Sukhona River . The main communal problem remains the high wear of existing engineering and technical communications, primarily the city water supply system. In this regard, it is recommended to pass the tap water before boiling through the filter. A significant number of residential buildings in the city are not connected to the water supply system and centralized sewage system , therefore there are quite a few water intakes on the streets of the city, and on the Sukhona River one can see rafts for rinsing clothes.
The city is supplied mainly on the basis of natural gas from the Northern Lights gas pipeline.

The following educational institutions are located in the city:
- preschool 7 kindergartens.
- secondary schools :
- Totemsky secondary school № 1 [62]

- until 2012 there was also the Totem Pedagogical College, reorganized and merged with the Polytechnic in 2012.
Higher education institutions in the city are represented only by a branch of the Modern Humanitarian Academy .
Health and Social Services
Medical care in the city provides Totemsky CRH. The hospital town is located in the northern part of the city in the blocks between the streets Sadovaya, Voroshilova, Kirov and Zagorodnaya. The city has one clinic. Separately from the hospital campus, in the central part of the city, the dental department of the Central Regional Hospital is located. There are three pharmacy items. Also on the territory of the city there is a municipal institution “Comprehensive Social Services Center”, during which a boarding school for lonely elderly people was created.
Sports and recreation
Basically, the sports life of the city is concentrated in the premises of the sports and recreation complex, in which the pool is open and there are many circles and sections. There are two rather large stadiums in the city: the central “Fatiha” and the stadium of the junior sports school, but none of them is fully equipped for sports. At the central stadium, there is also a playground for playing beach volleyball and a basketball and volleyball court, which are currently almost not used for their intended purpose.
In the central part of the city there are several parks - popular recreation areas for Totmichi: the Freedom Fighters Garden, the Vakhrushev Park, the Sailors' Square. Near the square Rubtsova, near the former pier, there is only one relatively convenient, though not well-maintained, city beach. Totmichi are most often used for swimming and relaxing on the suburban beaches on the Eden'ge River and in the town of Desyatina on the Tsarev River.
International Activities
The international activities in Totma are primarily related to the development of the project “Russian America: a link between times and generations”, implemented with the support of the Totemsky District Administration. A number of important agreements were signed with the Fort Ross Museum in Northern California. A video bridge and chimes of Totma - Fort Ross bells, dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Fair, are performed annually. In recent years, in connection with the 200th anniversary of Fort Ross Fortress, Totma was visited by the former US consul in St. Petersburg, Sheila Gwaltney [63] and the acting consul Bruce Turner [64] [65] , the former president of the historical association “Fort Ross “John Middleton [66] , President of Fort Ross Park Sarah Svidler [67] , as well as a delegation of North American Indians of the Kashaya tribe [68] . Partnerships continue to develop in the present.
