The program was broadcast on American radio from 1952 to 1961 [1] , and the televersion started on September 10, 1955 on CBS and continued for twenty seasons, until the finale in 1975. The series went down in history, becoming the longest prime-time drama, and remained the absolute leader until 2010, when Law and Order equaled it in duration (however, it only had 456 episodes compared to 635 Gunsmoke ).
The series took the place of the most popular television program from 1957 to 1961, until the time when the episodes were extended from half an hour to an hour. The show remained popular throughout the entire broadcast period and its closure was unexpected for both the audience and actors, given that the project in the last season was still among the 30 most popular programs [2] . Although the program was closed in 1975 and replaced by Roda , episode reruns were regularly aired on a variety of other channels, and several continuation television films were shot. Also at the peak of the success of the series, related products were produced, including video games, comics and books
Over its twenty-year history, the series has received a number of awards, including six Emmy awards, including the award for the best drama series in 1958 [3] . After decades, the project was repeatedly included in the lists of the best shows in the history of television [4] [5] [6] . In 2002, the series was included in the list of fifty greatest television shows of all time according to the TV Guide [7] .
