History
The history of the library is inseparable from the history of the Jagiellonian University , founded in 1364 . From the 15th century and up to 1940, the library was located in the medieval building of Collegium Maius on St. Anne street, 8. The library was founded either at the same time as the university, or a few years later, because the evidence on which the library was already in 1367 reached us donated manuscript. In 1429, the charter of the library De Libraria custodienda was approved, according to which the library was managed by two curators (custodes librariae), who were appointed from among university professors. From the 16th century , the position of the head of the “Father of Books” (pater librorum) was introduced. At the end of the XVII century, the library had more than 10,000 books. In 1774-1777, the cataloging of library funds began, which already numbered approx. 32,000 books.
Since 1802, the funds have been cataloged following the example of the Vienna University Library .
In 1900, Professor Karol Estreicher (Karol Estreicher) began the Polish national bibliography Bibliografia Polska. In the same year, a monument was erected on the territory of the library to one of the most famous students who used it, Nikolai Kopernik .
In 1931–1939, a new building was built for the library at Mitskevich Alley , 22.
On September 6, 1939, the Jagiellonian University was closed by the occupation authorities of Nazi Germany . 180 professors were interned and subsequently almost all were killed. On November 6, 1939, the library was also closed.
In 1940, in the library premises, the occupying power organized from the funds of the university library and many confiscated collections the so-called “State Krakow Library ( German Staatsbibliothek Krakau )”.
After the war, the library was able to resume its work, the funds of the reading room, exported to Silesia , also returned to Krakow .
At the end of 2008, the library had 6,441,202 storage units. The library has more than 300 employees. The current director is Professor Zdzislav Petrik.
