History
The building of the City House of Culture was built on the site of a former stone rotunda with a concert hall, erected in 1909 [1] .
In 1896, a tenant of the city garden Hanamirov built a wooden rotunda to the right of the central entrance to the garden, which burned down two years later [1] .
Only 10 years later, a new rotunda was built on the same site, but already at the expense of the city. She was white-stone, with beautiful columns supporting the arch. Castle stones of windows and other architectural elements emphasized the addiction of the architect B.I. Gershkovich to the classical style, which was no longer fashionable at that time. Although the shape of the building in the plan did not correspond to the exact definition of “rotunda” (from lat. Rotundus - round), the Taganrozhites called this building exactly that - “new rotunda”. The rotunda was leased. In July 1910, the private theater "New Mirage" opened in it, in 1913 - the Apollo cinema. The concert hall accommodated 200 people, it was attended by such famous guest artists as Alexander Skryabin , Sergey Rachmaninov , Alexander Grechaninov and others.
During the period of revolution and civil war, the Apollo cinema became the center of the political life of the city. Worked here: the Military Revolutionary Committee, the Council of Workers and Peasants' Deputies, the newspaper, etc. The most important city meetings were held in the building. So, in January 1920, a meeting was held on the organization of the KSM (Komsomol).
In April 1918, the "People’s House" was opened, in March 1920 - the "Proletarian Club. comrade Lunacharsky "(it was often called the" Club of tanners "). In 1926 and in 1927, Vladimir Mayakovsky performed here. After the transfer of the Tanners Club to another building, the House of Folk Art and the Theater of the Young Spectator were located here. Youth Theater worked here until the war.
Damaged during the occupation, the building was mothballed until the end of the 1950s. Then began its restoration and reconstruction for the City House of Culture. Using the previous foundation and parts of the old external and internal walls, the second floor was built on, the auditorium was expanded and expanded, and the rooms were redeveloped. The chief of staff for the construction of the GorDK was Jean Kozhevnikov [2] . The new building of the City House of Culture was commissioned on April 29, 1962 [3] . The grand opening of the GDK took place on August 9, 1962 .
In November 2012, the 50th anniversary of the City House of Culture was celebrated on a large scale [2] .
