Short Biography
Alan Edward Michael was born on August 22, 1943 in the village of Brighiran , on the island of Anglesey in Wales , in the family of Leslie and Betty Michael. He received primary and secondary education at the Colvin Bay High School . Then from 1962 to 1964 he studied at Kiel University , where he defended a bachelor 's degree in philosophy and English .
He worked as a reporter in Cardiff's evening newspaper, The South Wales Echo. In 1971, he left journalism and until 1987, when he was elected to the Parliament of Great Britain , he was known as a youth and public figure. In 1972, he was appointed Justice of the Peace, President of the Cardiff Juvenile Court. From 1973 to 1989, he also served as an adviser to Cardiff City Hall.
In 1966, he married Mary Sofia Crowley, from whom he has five children: three daughters and two sons. He is also the grandfather of ten grandchildren.
Political Activities
In 1987, at the general election of the British Parliament, Alan Michael was elected as a deputy from the Labor Party, taking the place of a party member, former Prime Minister James Callahan . Subsequently, he was re-elected as a deputy in 1992 , 1999 , 2001 , 2005 and 2010 , although, starting in 1992, he lost several percent of the vote in each subsequent election. In 2010, during the main election campaign, Alan Michael said at a rally in his constituency that he considers himself not a professional politician, but a professional worker with youth who has been using his experience working with youth for positive changes in society over the past twenty-three years. He also claimed that being a deputy was not just a job for him, but a vocation.
He served as a junior minister in the Ministry of the Interior between 1997 and 1998. On October 27, 1998, Tony Blair appointed Alan Michael Secretary of State for Wales.
After the first election to the National Assembly for Wales, May 12, 1999 , becoming the leader of the Welsh Labor Party, Alan Michael was elected First Secretary of Wales .
In July 1999, he resigned as Secretary of State for Wales. On February 9, 2000 , after a vote of no confidence, he resigned from the post of first secretary of Wales.
From 2001 to 2005, he served as Secretary of State (for Agriculture) in the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture. From 2005 to 2006, he was Minister of Industry and Regions in the Department of Trade and Industry. He resigned as Minister in May 2006 .
