Initial Biography
Petr Vakulovich Tertyshny was born on February 2 (15), 1899 in the village of Stepanki, now Cherkasy district, Cherkasy region of Ukraine, into a peasant family.
After receiving secondary education he worked as a machinist.
Military Service
Civil War
In April 1919 he was drafted into the Red Army , after which he served as a Red Army soldier in the 50th Ukrainian Soviet regiment and the 105th separate railway battalion, as part of which he took part in the hostilities on the Southern Front against the troops under the command of General A.I. Denikin . In June 1920 he was sent to the 363rd Infantry Regiment, after which he took part in hostilities in the territory of the Podolsk province and in Galicia during the Soviet-Polish war , as well as against troops under the command of S. Petlyura . He served as the squad leader and platoon commander.
In 1920, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for excellence in battles.
Interwar
In December 1920, he was appointed to the post of division commander in the 1st Separate Cadre Infantry Regiment ( 41st Infantry Division , Kiev Military District ), in January 1921 - to the post of commander of the 361st Infantry Regiment, and then to the post platoon commander in the 394th Infantry Regiment. He took part in the fight against banditry in the Chernobyl region. In 1921 he graduated from repeated courses at the headquarters of the 44th Infantry Division . Since July 1922, he served as platoon commander and assistant company commander in the 132nd Donetsk Rifle Regiment ( Ukrainian Military District ).
In 1925 he graduated from the Kiev United Military School .
In August 1927 he was sent to the 43rd Rifle Regiment, where he served as company commander and assistant chief of staff of the regiment. In 1928 he joined the ranks of the CPSU (b) . In April 1931, he was appointed assistant chief of the 1st sector of the 2nd department of the headquarters of the Ukrainian military district.
In November 1933 he was sent to the Far East , where he served as assistant chief of sector of the 4th department of the OKDVA headquarters, military controller and deputy authorized commission of the Soviet control under the SNK of the USSR for the Far Eastern Territory . In September 1939, he was appointed to the post of head of the initial and pre-conscription military training department of the headquarters of the Kharkov military district .
In November 1940 he was sent to study at the Higher Rifle and Tactical Courses " Shot ".
World War II
After completing the courses, Tertyshny was appointed to the post of military commander of Novgorod in July 1941 , in August to the post of commander of the 1004th Infantry Regiment, in November to the post of deputy commander of the 3rd Panzer Division ( North-Western Front ), in December of the same years - to the post of commander of the 237th Infantry Division , formed in the Kemerovo region , and then relocated and took part in the hostilities in the Voronezh region.
In August 1942 he was appointed to the post of chief of the combat training department of the headquarters of the 38th Army ( Voronezh Front ), and in November of the same year, to the post of commander of the 161st Infantry Division , which soon took part in the liberation of Kharkov during the Kharkov offensive operation . Soon the division participated in the Battle of Kursk (in the second echelon of the southern front), the Belgorod-Kharkov offensive operation , during which it liberated Lebedin .
On September 23, the division under the command of Tertyshny crossed the Dnieper on the territory of the Kanevsky district ( Cherkasy region ) and took a bridgehead on the right bank of the river, repelling the enemy’s counterattack.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 23, 1943, for the able command of the division and the determination and courage shown, Major General Pyotr Vakulovich Tertyshny was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 2023)
Soon, the 161st Infantry Division took part in the Zhytomyr-Berdichev operation .
In July 1944, Tertyshny was appointed commander of the 15th Rifle Corps , who soon took part in the hostilities during the Lviv-Sandomierz , Sandomierz-Silesia , Upper Silesia , Moravian-Ostrava and Prague offensive operations , as well as in the liberation of the cities of Zolochev , Debica , Chrzanow and Raciborz .
Post-War Career
After the end of the war in his former post.
From July 1945 he was at the disposal of the Military Council of the Northern Group of Forces and in October of that year he was appointed head of the Directorate of Combat and Physical Training of the same group of troops. After graduating from the Higher Academic Courses at the K.E. Voroshilov Higher Military Academy in May 1949, he was appointed commander of the 41st Rifle Corps ( Belorussian Military District ), and in May 1952 - to the post of assistant commander of the troops of the Turkestan Military District .
Lieutenant General Pyotr Vakulovich Tertyshny in September 1954 went into reserve. He died on March 4, 1997 in Kiev . He was buried in the Forest Cemetery [1] .
