Yaoguay ( Chinese 妖怪 ), yaomo ( Chinese 妖魔 , literally, “demon”) or yaojing (妖精, literally, “seductive”) is a Chinese term that usually means a demon , a ghost , a monster. The Yoghuais are mainly beast animals, the evil spirits of deceased animals that were brutally abused in life and who returned for vengeance, or fallen celestial beings who gained magical power through the practice of Taoism . Their main goal is to achieve immortality and, thus, divinity. In Journey to the West , demons usually seek this out by abducting and devouring holy people (in this case, Xuanzang ).

Yoguai Varieties
Some yoguas are of very unusual origin. In the case of Bai gu-ching , this is the skeleton of a woman who has become a demon. Many yoguhai are werewolf foxes , or according to Journey to the West, pet deities. There are also yoguai kings (mo-wans) who command a number of smaller demonic minions.
In Chinese folklore, hell ( Diyuy ) is a place that is filled with various evil spirits. The images of most of these monsters were influenced by Indian demonology - Rakshasas , Yaks and, therefore, have some similarities with Japanese ones.
The term "yoguai" was borrowed by the Japanese, in Japanese it sounds like a youkai ; the native Japanese equivalent, which is sometimes written in the same characters , sounds like "mononoke."
