Paprin (Rus. Paprin, commercial name) is a type of protein-vitamin concentrate produced from fodder yeast grown on paraffin medium - waste oil.
Paprin contains a large amount of yeast protein , about 50%, and provides a quick weight gain for animals feeding on this product [1] . Paprin was actively produced in the USSR and in the countries of the “socialist camp,” and production continues in much smaller quantities even now.
In the USSR, the first large paprin production plant, with a capacity of 70,000 tons per year, was commissioned in 1973. As raw materials used oil refining. For growing on paraffins, the yeasts of the genus Candida (Candida maltosa, Candida guilliermondii, Candida lipolytica) were mainly used. In the 1980s, 1 million tons of paprika and other similar yeast proteins were produced in the USSR, which accounted for 2/3 of the world total. GDR and Hungary were among the leaders in the biotechnological production of yeast feed protein and lipophilic-fat complexes.
In the late 1990s - 1990s, significant health problems were identified for animals fed with papriin, in particular damage to the main organs. Animals grew smaller in size and gave less offspring. In their meat was noted the accumulation of a number of abnormal amino acids. Although it was believed that these changes did not affect the quality of meat for humans, detailed studies were not conducted. Special warnings concerned the possible exacerbation of certain chronic diseases. Other problems related to the danger of the production process itself, in particular the occurrence of certain characteristic diseases among workers of enterprises and residents of the surrounding territories [2] , since the yeast of the genus Candida is conditionally pathogenic and can cause fungal diseases in people ( candidiasis ). In addition, fine yeast dust is a strong allergen .
As a result of these problems, as well as due to the economic crisis, production dropped sharply in the 1990s. For environmental reasons, interest in the industry worldwide has declined. Now the limited use of paprin is found only in the rations of fur animals [1] .
