Biography
The son of an engineer, large lawyers, engineers, university teachers, and politicians left the family on the side of both father and mother. Preparing for the career of an architect, he entered the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo , but from 1904 he was forced to take care of his own health (he had tuberculosis), was treated in Brazil and in Switzerland ( 1916 - 1917 ), where he met Paul Eluard in one of the sanatoriums . With the outbreak of World War II he returned to Brazil. He made his debut book of post-symbolic verses in 1917 . In 1922 he participated in the Week of Modern Art in Sao Paulo , his poem Toad became a manifesto of Brazilian modernism. In 1938 - 1956 he taught literature at colleges and the university. He was engaged in journalism. Translated from English, first of all - dramas ( Shakespeare , John Ford , Thornton Wilder , Sean O'Casey ), French ( Frederic Mistral , Cocteau ), German ( Schiller , Spitterler , Brecht ), Spanish ( Juan Ines de la Cruz , Sorrilla , Antonio Gala).
