Matthew spent three more victorious fights against experienced boxers, and in June 2011 he entered the battle for the WBA super world champion title with the German, Felix Sturm . The fight came out very intense and competitive. By a separate decision of the judges, the victory was awarded to the German. The decision caused a lot of controversy. [2] [3] .
A convincing confrontation against the WBA super champion, raised MacLean in the ratings, despite the official defeat, the Briton met with the middleweight king, the Argentine, Sergio Martinez . In the battle with the Argentinean for the title of The Ring . The first half of the battle took place in an equal fight, Martinez was active only as necessary. To a large extent, he spurred Sergio's knockdown in the 7th round, which he went to after a precise lateral Macklin, complemented by a stumble of the Argentinean. By increasing the number of shots thrown, Martinez took possession of the advantage after what happened, and at the end of the 11th round his efforts were embodied in two knockdowns of Matthew, who went to the floor after the Argentinean left. To top it all off, the Briton got a cut, and the corner did not let him out for the final three-minute period [4] .
In September 2012 , Macklin knocked out former champion Joan Alsin in the first round and returned to the middleweight elite. [5]
On June 29, 2013, Maclean, in the rank of the WBA belt challenger, met with reigning world champion Gennady Golovkin . At the end of the first round, Macklin missed Golovkinβs left hook and only survived thanks to the ropes. In the third round, Golovkin pressed Macklin to the ropes and completed a series of heavy knockouts in the liver [6] .
In November 2013, Maclean returned to the ring by defeating the American Lamar Russ (14-0) [7] .
