History
In the 18th century, the current city was a settlement of Herero migrants from Bechuanaland (today Botswana ) with their leader. Then most of them headed to Windhoek , neighboring Gross Bartender and Ochimbingwe . Later, a small portion of the tribe returned to Okahandyu. The supreme leader and the “Keeper of the Fire of the Ancestors” (the German Hüter des Ahnenfeuers ) appeared. Here the leaders of the tribe were born, which went down in the history of the colonial German South-West Africa - Magarero (1820) and Samuel Magarero (1856).
Bloody events took place more than once in Okahandye. On August 23, 1850, Yonker Afrikaner with his tribe attacked the settlement, after which the power passed to him. This incident was captured as a “massacre in Okahandja” ( German: Blutbad von Okahandja ).
