Personal Information and Education
Terrence Wilcutt was born October 31, 1949 in Russellville , Kentucky . In 1967 he graduated from high school in the city of Louisville of the same state. In 1974, he received a bachelor 's degree in mathematics from Western Kentucky State University .
Married, two children. Loves flying, running, lifting weights, carving on wood [1] .
Until NASA
After graduating from college in 1974, Wilkutt taught at the Higher School of Mathematics for two years, then, in 1976, he entered the United States Marine Corps . In 1978 he graduated from the School of Pilots. He flew F-4 Phantom II planes , at Kenoh airbase, Hawaii . During two business trips I visited Japan , Korea and the Philippines . In 1983 he was retrained on F / A-18 Hornet airplanes, served at Lemur air base, California . In 1986, Wilkutt was sent to the Naval Test Pilot School , at an air base near the town of Patuxent , Maryland , where he received the title "Honored Pilot". After graduating from the School was left on the same air base. There, Wilkutt flew F / A-18 Hornet , A-7 Corsair II and F-4 Phantom II planes, as well as other planes to test a wide variety of projects and secret programs. It has more than 4,400 flight hours on more than 30 different types of aircraft [2] .
Preparing for space flight
Took part in the 12th set. In January 1990, he was admitted to the NASA squad of the thirteenth set , a candidate for astronauts . Began to undergo training in the course of general space training (GST). At the end of the course, in July 1991, he was qualified as a “pilot of the shuttle” and assigned to the NASA astronaut office. He dealt with the following issues: work of the main shuttle engine, working as a team of support staff for astronauts during launches and landings at the Kennedy Space Center , Florida .
Space Flight
- The first flight - STS-68 [3] , shuttle " Endeavor ". From September 30 to October 11, 1994 as a “pilot”. The second flight of the shuttle with the Space Radar Laboratory (SRL-2), designed to develop a system of all - weather radar sensing [4] . The flight duration was 11 days 5 hours 47 minutes [5] .
- The second flight - STS-79 [6] , shuttle Atlantis . From September 16 to September 26, 1996 as a “pilot”. During the STS-79 mission, an operation was carried out to dock with the Mir orbital station, where the shuttle delivered food , water , equipment for scientific experiments in the USA and Russia , and the crew members were exchanged (the first mission was to change an American crew member). During the mission, a record was set for the joining of the heaviest masses of both complexes in space. In addition, the STS-79 is the first flight, where the dual module SpaceHab was involved [7] . The flight duration was 10 days 3 hours 20 minutes [8] .
- The third flight - STS-89 [9] , shuttle " Endeavor ". From January 23 to January 31, 1998 as the “commander of the ship”. The flight program included the eighth docking of the shuttle with the Russian orbital station Mir , the delivery and return of cargo, the rotation of astronauts at the station [10] . Astronauts landed safely at Edwards Air Force Base . The flight duration was 8 days 19 hours 47 minutes [11] .
- The fourth flight - STS-106 [12] , shuttle " Atlantis ". From September 8 to September 20, 2000 as a “ship commander”. In the cargo compartment of the shuttle, there was a double space module “ SpaceHab ”, in which materials and equipment were delivered, delivered to the International Space Station (ISS) . The main tasks are to prepare the station for the arrival of the first crew ( ISS-1 ) and installation work outside the station. A 2 meter long boom was installed with a magnetometer on the outside of the station and several cables between the Zarya module and the new Star module . Of the 9 necessary fiber optic cables were laid 4. The flight duration was 11 days 19 hours 11 minutes [13] .
The total duration of flights into space is 42 days 0 hours 05 minutes.
After the flight
On August 17, 2011, he was appointed Head of the Directorate of Safety and Flight Operations at NASA Headquarters in Washington . September 1, 2011 replaced the resigned astronaut Brian O'Connor .
Awards and prizes
