Biography
Giovanni Battista Lugari was born on February 18, 1846 , in Rome , in the territory of the Papal States . Educated at Queen’s University and the Pontifical Gregorian University . Lugari was ordained a priest on January 15, 1896 , when he was almost fifty years old.
He then entered the service of the Roman Curia , and on February 3, 1896, he was appointed as an assessor and sub-fighter of the faith of the Sacred Congregation of Rites . After that, three days later, on February 6 , Lugari was appointed secret chamberlain supernumerario . Lugari was elevated to the rank of full faith promoter on June 4, 1897 . On the same day, he was elevated to the rank of Court Prelate of His Holiness .
On March 28, 1900, Lugari was produced in the canons of the Liberian basilica , and on June 10 the canonics of the Lateran basilica . On April 22, 1901, Lugari was appointed papal auditor and served as a faith builder in the canonization process of Joan of Arc that same year. He became an assessor of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Chancery on January 11, 1902 , and on February 1 a canon of St. Peter's .
On February 2, 1902, Lugari was elevated to the rank of apostolic protonotary supernumerarium , and then, on April 18 of the same year, consultant to the Holy Congregation of Rites. His achievements in the long years of work in Curia were appreciated by Pope Pius X , who elevated his dignity to the Cardinal-Deacon of the titular church of Santa Maria in Portico at the consistory of November 27, 1911 .
Cardinal Lugari died in his native Rome, at the age of 68. He is buried in the cemetery of Campo Verano.
