Smith studied in Lund and Uppsala , where he became a Ph.D. in 1863. In 1861 and 1868, he participated in the Swedish expeditions to the island of Spitsbergen . Since 1871, the curator of the vertebrate department in the Museum of Natural History . Since 1875 member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . From 1879, he taught zoology at the University of Stockholm .
