Game System

Dead Head Fred is a third-person adventure game with battles and puzzles . The main feature of the game is the ability to change Fred's head and beheading.

Story

The game begins with the awakening of Fred by Dr. Steiner in his castle. Dr. Steiner is a crazy scientist used by Ulysses Pitt, a famous local businessman. Fred tries amnesia, the Doctor tells him that he was a private detective and participated in a very important investigation regarding Willis Pitt. Fred finds out that he was exposed, then killed and beheaded by order of Pitt. Instead of a head, he now has a jar of greenish liquid containing eyes and a brain. She is his life support system. Fred intends to complete the investigation, and avenge his lost head.

Characters

The main character is Fred Newman (voiced by John Christopher McGinley ), a private detective.

Fred is the only protagonist, but since each head gives him a different set of animations, he can be considered as nine separate characters. Since he does not have a proper face, Fred's mood is depicted by the tone of his voice and the expression of his eyes and frontal lobes of the brain. Fred is a wit, a sarcastic person, and sometimes breaks the fourth wall, for example, cursing a player when he dies.

Ulysses Pitt (John Polito), the primary antagonist of the game, initially a petty bully, turns out to be a racketeer. Pitt has many minions throughout the Hope Falls, the most famous of which is his left-handed lieutenant, whose right leg was amputated and replaced by tommygun .

Fred gains several allies throughout the game, including Dr. Steiner, who resurrected him, his girlfriend Jeanne Rossini (Carey Walgren), and his former partner Benny Salazar.

Fred’s enemies are usually Pitt’s accomplices, like the skeletons of bandits , or creatures generated by special radiation in Hope Falls, like zombies and automated stuffed animals.

Fred's Heads

The game has only 9 goals and each of them has its own property. 7 goals are intended for battles and they can be upgraded (only 2 upgrades per 1 head). The heads also have their own 2 special attacks (hold down the Block button and press the Hit or Special Attack button). Special attacks are limited to be filled with the fury of the enemy (to make up, take a counter-strike or tear off your head).

Jar head with a brain of Fred ( English. Jar head ) - The main head of Fred. A voice device and a life support device in the form of a satchel are connected to the bank. Unlike all goals, the bank gives good regeneration. There is also an invisibility module and it is turned on with a certain button to turn off enough to jump or take a hit. But there are 2 minuses in the module: Firstly, the module was created in a hurry and the invisibility can turn off at any moment, and secondly, you cannot become invisible if the player is in a puddle. Special attacks: Shock, Electroshock. With such a head, it’s easiest to deal with skeletons and stone idols, but loses the battle with executioners, scarecrows, gladiators and mutants.

  • Upgrade:
    • Regeneration + - when carrying a can, health is very quickly restored.
    • Vile attack - The invisibility module is working properly. In stealth mode, the first strike deals double damage to electricity.

Zombie Head ( Eng. Corpse head ) - Appears at the beginning as a low-quality copy and crumbles before the first boss. To get this head, you need to collect 5 zombie heads and take it to Sam. Putting Zombie's head on, Fred starts to stagger. The head is unique in that it can be used to suck out any liquid and fill it with something, extinguish a fire, spit. It is useful to use it as a flamethrower against enemies (fill your head with flammable liquid and spit on the fire). You can also soar with this head. There is also the property of poisoning the air, people-enemies begin to cough and stand still for a while. The resurrected evil does not work. Special attacks: Powerful bite, Gas cloud. With executioners and farmers, this head is perfectly straightened.

  • Upgrade:
    • Powerful jet - Spit liquid on the enemy and he will fly off, taking light damage.
    • Plague - Breathe in one enemy, the disease will spread to the nearest enemies.

Voodoo Head ( Eng. Shprunken head ) - Defeat the first executioner and get this head. Putting it on Fred will decrease to the size of a rat and begin to look around nervously. With this head you can penetrate into minks, rat dens, into buildings. You can’t beat enemies. The ability to use a tackle, and in a combination of a tackle and a jump Fred will jump above a regular jump. Special attacks: no.

  • Upgrade: no.

Skull head - Get 5 skeleton heads in the city (uptown) and take it to Sam. Having put on this head, Fred gets up in a fighting stance and fingers turn into bone blades. The head can shoot with teeth, you can also aim and shoot when viewed from the first person. Also, the head gives Fred the ability to climb walls, namely on the walls smeared with blood, intestines and bones. The darts of Tiki people do not affect you. Special attacks: Sharp throwing ribs, Fatal tornado. This head will not lose against zombies, scarecrows and mutants, but you can’t fight with such executioners, farmers, stone idols and gladiators.

  • Upgrade:
    • Teeth in two rows - When attacking, the number of teeth increases.
    • Blood bath - There is a chance of critical injury upon impact.

Dummy head - Complete a mission with Ella Cosmo and your head. With his head on, Fred will stand upright. This head helps in conversations with people. You cannot attack and run. Special attacks: no.

  • Upgrade: no.

Tiki head - Collect 5 Tiki people from the Bongo Club and take them to Sam. Having put on this head, Fred will raise a hand with a club. Has the ability to use Statues 1 for teleportation. Also, Fred gets the opportunity to put totems and gets a club to beat and shoot darts. Special attacks: Head attack, Fan shooting. Cope with zombies and gladiators at a time, but do not mess with farmers and scarecrows.

  • Upgrade:
    • Totem of Revenge - Fred puts a totem bait, all enemies receive portions of poison.
    • Bad medicine - A substance is added to the poison in darts, shoot at the enemy and the enemy will temporarily switch to your side.

Head of the Idol ( English Stone head ) - as well as the head of the Zombie appears at the beginning as a low-quality copy and crumbles before the first boss. Get 5 stone idols at the Montezum Casino and take it to Sam. Wearing this head, Fred will become muscular. With this head you can move heavy objects, ram the enemy and you can swim the bonus under water. Special attacks: Shock wave with the help of the foot, Rockfall. Powerfully kills zombies, skeletons, gladiators and mutants, but it's useless to fight against scarecrows and other idols.

  • Upgrade:
    • Powerful Damage - Increased damage from a blow.
    • Increased radius - The radius of the shock wave.

Scarecrow Head - Get 5 stuffed animals on Farms and take it to Sam. Having put on this head, Fred will become "straw", and the hand will be immobilized. The head allows you to shoot crows (if you set yourself on fire, you can shoot burning crows), plus complete immunity to fire. Special attacks: Bird shelling, Raven tornado. Against zombies, humans, tiki and farmers are great, but beware of mutants, stone idols and other scarecrows.

  • Upgrade:
    • Triple Shot - Instead of one crow, you shoot three.
    • Finishing - Ravens circle over the enemy and peck to death.

Mutant Head - Get 5 mutant heads in Bunis and take it to Sam. The last head in this game. Wearing this head, Fred begins to cramp, his right hand clenching. Uses vomiting attacks. A unique property of the head is that when you put on this head you will completely forget about radiation and you can go to the most inaccessible places. Special attacks: Energy beam, Explosive flash.

  • Upgrade:
    • Reactor - You generate deadly radiation.
    • Toxic vomiting - Increased vomiting damage.

Objects and Regions

In this game, there are places and regions where Fred takes place.

Bugs

Unlike the English version of the game, in some Russian versions there were bugs that made it difficult to complete the game:

  • The game crashed when the character entered the location of "Montezuma Casino" (it is treated if you go to the location from the English version).
  • Charlie Webb character disappears from Zombitown.
  • In some places, the first-person view refuses (it is treated by transition).
  • At 5 km. from Charlie Webb’s house in Sombitown, in 2 houses called 103 South Road and Old Man Pearson's Man .

Reception

The game received mostly positive reviews, in particular for black humor and the unique world of the game.

At the same time, some critics noticed the lack of depth in the gameplay and the insufficiently diverse combat system.

In 2008, Dead Head Fred received the Game Writers Guild of America Award.

You may know that Ash is an ally of Fred Newmon.
