History
The club was founded on August 25, 1928 under the name of Batacazo Football Club . As the colors of the club, red and green were chosen, and the founder of the team, Juan Delfino, denied the assumption that any deep meaning was invested in these colors - he just liked them personally [1] . For 4 years, “Batakaso” (this name can be translated as “Drummer”) did not play matches with teams from other cities, and only in 1932 the leaders of “Batakaso” sent a letter to Rocha to play with the local “River Plate” (modern FC “ Rocha ”), but the leaders of the “River” did not respond to this letter, regarding it as a joke [2] . This became a catalyst for changing the name of the club - the name Deportivo Maldonado won by a wide margin on the Board of Directors by a wide margin. July 2, 1932 in the newspaper El Día was officially published an announcement on the change of name of the club [3] .
Subsequently, over the course of six decades, Deportivo Maldonado played in local tournaments at the department level, winning a number of local trophies (five championships of the department, as well as nine championships of the administrative center - Maldonado) and only in 1995 the team received professional status, leaving from the Football Organization of the Interior and joining the Football Association of Uruguay .
In 1998, Deportivo Maldonado secured the right to play butt games against Rampla Juniors . Having exchanged wins 3: 2 and 1: 3 (and, in the second case, the club from Maldonado won with a larger goal difference), the teams played the third match, which ended in a draw 1: 1. The capital club was stronger in the penalty shootout - 6: 5. However, the AUF decided to include in the Example for the next season from the Second Division three clubs from the Interior (teams outside the capital) - respectively, “Deportivo Maldonado”, “ Paysandu Bella Vista ” and “ Tacuarembo ”. To some extent, sports justice prevailed in relation to the “Deportivo Maldonado”, since taking into account the difference of goals scored and goals conceded in the two play-offs, the Maldonians would have bypassed Rampla [4] .
“Red-green” has long been entrenched in the elite of Uruguayan football. In 2004, the club was renamed Club Deportivo Maldonado Punta del Este , because it merged with the "Cultural and Democratic Center of Punta del Este" ( Centro Cultural y Democrático Punta del Este ). After departing from Examples from the 2006/07 season, the club was returned to its former name.
At the end of 2009, a sports open joint-stock company Deportivo Maldonado SAD was formed with the participation of English businessmen.
