History
The football stadium in Rivera was built in 1927, and after that it was reconstructed twice - in 1966 and before the 1995 America's Cup . During the last renovation, the capacity of the stadium increased significantly and for this indicator it ranked second in the country. Despite this, the level of football in the city remains quite low. The home team, Frontera Rivera , held only 2 seasons in the Uruguay Championship Division (in 1999 and 2000), and even then, its entry into the elite was largely due to the reform of the championship structure and the expansion of examples at the expense of provincial teams.
Twice in the stadium Atilio Payva Oliver played team of Uruguay. For the first time - June 28, 1995, the team of New Zealand became a rival. It was the last test match before the start of the America's Home Cup, which was crowned with the hosts' victory [1] .
At the 1995 America's Cup, the Athilio Paiva Oliver Stadium took on all the matches of Group B with the national teams of Brazil , Ecuador , Colombia and Peru . On July 17, this stadium hosted one of the most spectacular fights, when in the quarterfinals of the America's Cup after a 2-2 draw in regular time, the current world champions Brazilians in the penalty shootout beat the current winners of the America's Cup to Argentines 4: 2.
On June 24, 2011, the Uruguay national team held their second-ever home match at the Athilio Paiva Oliver Stadium. This time the Estonian team was defeated - 3: 0 [2] . It is noteworthy that this was also the last test match before the start of the America's Cup 2011 , which in the end the Uruguay national team also won.
In 2010, the capital " Cerro ", who had reached the Libertadores Cup , played one group stage match against Internacional in the arena in the River [3] .
After the opening of the Campeon del Siglo stadium in 2016, Hatilio Paiva Oliver became the third largest stadium in Uruguay.
