In 1984, Williams met with experienced American boxer James Tillis (30-4). Tillis knocked down Williams twice in the first round, but he ran out of steam and Williams won by unanimous decision.

On May 20, 1985, a battle took place between the undefeated champion Larry Holmes (47-0) and the undefeated Karl Williams (16-0). The fight for Holmes was unexpectedly difficult. The younger and more agile Williams constantly pierced the jab, which caused Holmes to have very swollen eyes at the end of the battle. As a result, Holmes defeated by a controversial unanimous decision, and Judge Jerry Roth awarded the victory to Holm with a one-point minimum advantage. Williams suffered his first loss in his career.

Williams got to the score of “8”, but the referee Randy Newmann looked at him and stopped the fight. The decision was controversial. The referee said in a post-match interview that Williams did not answer the question of willingness to continue the fight. On March 8, 1991, a fight took place between former world champion Tim Witherspoom (33-3) and former title contender Karl Williams (23-3). Williams entered the ring with a clear margin. Witherspoon knocked down Williams twice in the second round and several times shook him in the fourth round with the left side to the head. Williams was inactive in the first half of the fight, but in the fifth round he struck the right uppercut, which probably led to swelling in the left eye of Witherspoon, which almost closed over time. In an equal battle, Witherspoom won the victory by a separate decision of the judges.

In 1991, he met Kimmuel Odum, but the battle was declared invalid. In January 1992, Williams won by TKO in the second round of Marshal Tilliman. In March 1992, Williams unexpectedly lost by unanimous decision to the little-known Jerry Jones .

In January 1993, Carl Williams met with Tommy Morison . Williams visited the ring flooring in the first and third rounds, but he turned the tide in the fifth round. He knocked down Morrison twice, won three rounds in a row, but in the eighth round he unexpectedly lost interest in the fight, began to complain to the referee about his dissection over his left eyebrow, after which he did not respond to the opponent’s attacks for a long time. Referee Mills Lane suddenly stopped the bout. At the time the fight stopped, Williams led the cards on two judges with the same score, while the third referee gave preference to Morrison. It was one of the strangest bouts of combat in the history of professional boxing.

In April 1993, Williams met with Frank Bruno . Williams has shown incredible stamina, having missed several hard shots in the first rounds. The culmination of the battle seemed to be brewing - in round 5, when Williams missed a few strong shots and flew off to the ropes, but managed to resist and held out until the end of the round. In the tenth round, Bruno struck the right cross. Williams collapsed into the ring. He rose to the score of "nine", but the referee decided to stop the fight, Williams did not dispute the decision.

1994-1997

In 1994, he lost by technical knockout in the 7th round to Alexander Zolkin .

In 1995, lost by unanimous decision of the judges to Melvin Foster .

In June 1997, he won by unanimous decision of the judges Marion Wilson .

In October 1997, lost by technical knockout in the seventh round to Anthony Green. After this fight, Carl Williams left boxing.
