Specter, Michael

Michael Specter ( born Michael Specter ; born 1955) is an American journalist, former correspondent and director of The Washington Post New York bureau, correspondent for The New York Times in Moscow (1994-1998). Since 1998 he has been working in The New Yorker magazine , where he covers the topics of science, technology and health.

Biography

Born in 1955 in Hartford ( Connecticut ) in the family of Howard and Eileen Specter. In 1977 he graduated from Vassar College . In 1985 he came to The Washington Post , where he first covered the New York news, and then became a scientific correspondent and director of the New York newspaper's bureau. In 1991, he joined the New York Times . In 1994, he was appointed correspondent for a newspaper in Moscow. In 1995, he became co-director of the Moscow bureau of The New York Times . He covered the First Chechen War , the 1996 presidential election , the crisis of Russian health care and other topics. In early 1998, he became a correspondent for The New York Times in Rome , where he covered various topics: the demographic crisis in Europe, Michelangelo and the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

In September 1998, he moved to The New Yorker magazine , where he wrote on topics such as the global AIDS epidemic, bird flu, malaria, synthetic biology, genetically modified foods, medical genetics, and the depletion of drinking water. In 2009, he published the book Denialism: How Irrational Thinking Hinders Scientific Progress, Harms the Planet, and Threatens Our Lives (“Denialism: how irrational thinking impedes scientific progress, destroys our planet and threatens our lives”). He authored biographical essays about many famous people: Lance Armstrong , Richard Branson , Peter Singer , P. Diddy , Manolo Blahnik , Larry Cramer and founder of PETA Ingrid Newkirk .

Awards and Prizes

In 2002, he received the Science Journalism Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science . [2] Twice became a laureate of the Media Achievement Award from the Global Health Council : in 2001, for the Indian 's Plague article on AIDS in India , and in 2004 for the article “Devastation” ( The Devastation ), dedicated to AIDS and the demographic crisis in Russia . In 2009, for his book on denialism, he received the Critical Thinking Award from the Skeptical Search Committee . [3] This award is awarded annually to the author of a published work with the best examples of healthy skepticism, logical analysis, or empirical science.

Personal life

In 1988, he married Alessandra Stanley , a Washington correspondent for Time magazine (now a television critic of The New York Times ). [4] Has a daughter, Emma, ​​from this marriage. The marriage ended in divorce.
