Basic Information
The Medal "For the Battle of Varyag and Koreyts" is a medal of the Russian Empire for rewarding sailors of the 1st rank armored cruiser of the first Pacific squadron of the Russian fleet Varyag and the gunner Koreorets participating in the battle of Chemulpo . The draft of this medal was approved on April 10, 1904. Established on June 5, 1904 by order of Emperor Nicholas II [1] [2] [3] [4] . Unlike other medals established in connection with the Russian-Japanese war, this medal was instituted directly during the war . All other medals were instituted after the war [3] .
Service Order
The medal “For the battle between Varyag and Koreytsa” was awarded to the crew of “Varyag” and “Koreytsa” , who accepted the battle at Chemulpo . 697 medals for the number of sailors and non-commissioned officers in the crew were minted. It is known that on the Varyag there were 21 officers , 4 conductors, 3 volunteers and 529 sailors and non-commissioned officers (only 30 people were killed), and on the Koreyts there were 6 officers, 160 sailors and non-commissioned officers and 1 cook. In addition to this medal, all lower ranks received the distinction of the Military Order of the 4th degree [5] . Two sailors received the distinction of the Military Order of the 3rd degree, since the 4th degree of the award already had [2] . Officers and military officials, including Rear Admiral Vsevolod Fyodorovich Rudnev , received the Order of Saint George of the 4th degree or other orders, and some officials from Varyag were not awarded with orders [2] . Although some sources state [3] that the medal “For the battle between Varyag and Koreyts on January 27, 1904 under Chemulpo” was not relied on by officers, the service records of officers [6] , as well as most sources, refute this point of view [1] [5] [7] [8] .
In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the battle of Chemulpo, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued decrees of February 8 and August 24, 1954, March 10 and August 9, 1955 awarded the medals "For Courage" to the surviving combatants [2] .
