Turkish railway

Turkish State Railway ( Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları ) (TCDD) is a state-owned national railway operator in Turkey with headquarters in Ankara . TCDD was founded on June 1, 1927. The Turkish government took over the management of the railways existing at that time within the borders of the Republic of Turkey, which appeared after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire , and also began the construction of new railway lines in the country [1] .

TCDD owns and operates all state railways in Turkey, serves most of Turkey's trains, including passenger, inter-regional and freight. In 2008, she owned 10,991 km of railway lines, which put her in 22nd place in the ranking of the largest railway systems in the world. In 2009, TCDD transported 17 105 353 tons of cargo and 7 118 699 passengers, which allowed it to take 33rd place among the largest passenger railway companies in the world. As of 2009, 25,593 people were employed at TCDD.

The Turkish State Railway owns shares in a number of other railway companies and railway service companies. She owns a 50% stake in İZBAN , a rail operator for commuter trains in Izmir . Since 1994, TCDD has been a member of InterRail.
