“Asli and Kerem” ( azerb. Əsli və Kərəm ) is the fifth mugham opera of Uzeyir Hajibeyov in four acts and six scenes. The libretto was written by the composer himself based on the well-known in the Caucasus, the ashug dastan of the same name . In the opera, as noted, the invincible power of love and spiritual beauty of a person is praised, a protest against feudal relations in nationalist tendencies propagated by representatives of clerical circles is revealed [1] .

The opera premiered on May 18 (31), 1912 in the premises of the current Azerbaijan Opera and Ballet Theater [2] . The director of the performance was Huseyn Arablinsky , conducted by the author himself [3] . Huseynkuli Sarabsky ( Kerem ), Ahmed Agdamsky ( Asli ), M. Teregulov ( Kara Keshish ), M. Mammadov ( Shah Isfahana), G. Gokchaylinsky ( Sheikh Nurali ) and others played in the roles. [3] Subsequently, the opera was staged in many cities Caucasus, Central Asia, Iran. In addition to Baku, opera was also staged in other cities of the republic ( Agdam , Nakhichevan , etc.). Since 1957, the stage of the Opera and Ballet Theater “Asli and Kerem” was staged in the orchestra edition of the composer Nazim Aliverdibekov. Since 1988, she was put on stage in a new production [1] .
