Located 39 km north-west of the city of Novosokolniki , on the Smerdel River.

According to the Regional Law of February 28, 2005 No. 420-OZ, as part of the municipal district, the village of Gorozhane became the administrative center of the Gorozhansky volost (rural settlement) [1] [2] [3] . In April 2015, Gorozhansky volost was abolished and Gorozhane village became part of the rural settlement Nasvinsky volost [4] .

The population is 362 people (2000) [8] , 279 people (2010).

Archeology

On the archaeological site near the village of Gorozhane, objects dating from the period of the third quarter of the 1st millennium AD were found. e. - XII-XIII centuries, but the bulk of the finds dates from the X-XI centuries: 245 coins, including the Byzantine folly of Roman the First, dated 920–944, a fragment of a pendant with the sign of the Rurikovich [9] , beads, 45 arrowheads, scales, weights, crosshairs of a sword , objects made of glass, clay, stone, ferrous and non-ferrous metal [10] [11] , Arab dirhema coins [12] , pasted eye bead, half horseshoe-shaped fastener ( brooch ) with twisted ends [13] .
