The Black Corsair ( Italian: Il corsaro nero ) is an 1898 adventure novel written by Emilio Salgari . The action takes place in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy . The protagonist - a man named Emilio Roccaner, known as the "Black Corsair" or "Lord of Ventimiglia " - is trying to avenge the governor of Maracaibo , Duke Van Gould, of the murdered brothers. To this end, he unites with several of the most famous pirates of that time, including Francois Olone and Henry Morgan , vowing not to calm down until he makes his retribution .
