Fung Quang Thanh ( Vietnamese. Phùng Quang Thanh , b.1949) - Vietnamese military and statesman. Minister of Defense of Vietnam (2006–2016), member of the Politburo of the CPV Central Committee (2006–2016) [1] . Hero of the People's Armed Forces of Vietnam (1971).

Biography
Born February 2, 1949 in the suburbs of Hanoi , now it is Melinh County. [2] Since 1967 - in military service, since 1968 - member of the Communist Party of Vietnam .
During the Vietnam War, he participated in several battles in the provinces of Kuangchi , as well as in the operation of Lam Son 719 against the South Vietnamese army . According to Vietnamese sources, on February 10, 1971, Fung Quang Thanh, commanding a company, defended the heights from the airborne assault of the South Vietnamese army, while his detachment disabled 38 enemy soldiers, losing only 8 people killed. Two days later, despite being wounded, Fung Quang Than remained in service and completed the combat mission assigned to his company. On September 20, 1971, Fung Quang Thanh was awarded the highest title “ Hero of the People’s Armed Forces ” for this feat. [2] [3] For services in the liberation of Vietnam, he was awarded many orders and medals. [2]
After the war, he held a number of command posts in the 1st Army Corps, then was sent to the USSR to study at the Academy of the General Staff . In 1991, after two years of study in the Soviet Union and the Military Academy of the Republic of Vietnam, Fung Quang Thanh was appointed commander of the 312th division, from 1993 to 1997 he served in the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army , from 1997 to 2001 - commander 1 th military district of Vietnam. In May 2001, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff and Deputy Minister of Defense of Vietnam. On April 25, 2006, he was elected a member of the Politburo of the CPV Central Committee and in June 2006 he was appointed Minister of Defense of Vietnam, replacing General Pham Wang Cha [3] [2] [4] .
In 2007, Fung Quang Thanu was awarded the rank of army general ( Vietnamese. Đại tướng ). [2] .
At the 12th Congress of the CPV in January 2016, he was not elected to the Politburo. On April 8, 2016, he was relieved of his post of Minister of Defense of Vietnam.
