Biography
Born in the family of a wealthy tea merchant. In 1895 he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology .
In 1899, Sloan's father and companion purchased the small ball-bearing factory Hyatt Roller Bearing Company in Newark ( New Jersey ), where Alfred worked after graduation, and made him CEO.
In 1916, General C. Motors President William C. Durant invited Sloane to unite, and two years later Sloane joined the corporation’s directorate. In 1923, shareholders appointed Sloan as the president of the company, setting him the task of creating effective centralized management with the current multivision structure.
Under his leadership, General Motors since the early 30s has become a leader in the American automotive industry.
After leaving the presidency due to progressive deafness, he served as chairman of the board of directors of General Motors.
In the 1930s, he maintained active business relations with Nazi Germany.
Founder of the charity organization Alfred Sloan Foundation .
Role in Management
Adherent of the scientific organization of labor ( Taylorism ). First introduced in the automotive industry the so-called. planned obsolescence of products and brand positioning. Established a huge General Motors dealer network throughout North America. The General Motors organizational chart, developed under the direction of Sloan, is considered classic.
In 1964, the School of Management of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was named after him, to which he provided sponsorship.
