Biography
Peter Capaldi was born on April 14, 1958 in Glasgow , Scotland . From the side of his mother, he has Irish roots [9] , from the side of his father - Italian and Scottish [10] . In addition to native English, she speaks Italian [11] . Together with his older brother and younger sister, Peter grew up in the northern Glasgow area of Springburn [10] . His parents, Gerald and Nancy, had their own ice cream business [9] .
He studied at St Teresa's Primary School in Glasgow, St Matthew's Primary School in Bishopbriggs and at St Ninian's High School in Kerkintillokh [12] . In 1976, Peter entered the Glasgow School of Art , which he successfully graduated in 1980 [13] . There he was a vocalist and guitarist in the punk band The Dreamboys [14] , in which the future famous TV presenter, actor and director Craig Ferguson [15] was the drummer. Before becoming an actor, for several years he acted as a stand-up comedian under the pseudonym Fraser Mickey [16] .
Career
Although Peter began acting in films since 1982 , his acting debut took place back in 1974: at the age of 16, he played a major role in adapting the play “ Inspector 's Visit ” by the theater troupe The Antonine Theater Group in Bishopbriggs [17] . A breakthrough for him was his first major role in the film " Local Hero " in 1983 , which is still considered a classic of British cinema of the 80s [18] . In the same year, the actor moved to London and received his first professional roles in the theater [19] . He consolidated his success in 1988 by playing in the horror based on the novel by Bram Stoker “The Lair of the White Worm ” and the movie “ Dangerous Communications ” [20] .
In 1993, Kapaldi wrote and directed the short film “ This Wonderful Life of Franz Kafka ” starring Richard E. Grant , for which he was awarded the Academy Award and BAFTA [21] . Of his roles during this period, it is worth noting Tristan Campbell in the sitcom “The Vicar of Dibley ” [20] , the transvestite Vera Reynolds in the television series “ The Main Suspect ” and the angel Islington in Neil Gaiman ’s urban fantasy “The Doorway ” [18] .
In 2003, Peter played the role of Dr. Ronnie Pilfrey in the comedy series A Little Over Forty , along with Benedict Cumberbatch and Hugh Laurie. [20] In 2004, he starred in the thriller The Deadly Labyrinth , and also played the role of Jean Cocteau in the biographical drama Modigliani [22] . After that, the actor appeared in such television series as “ Murders in Midsomer ”, “ Resurrecting the Dead ” and “ Skins ” [18] .
In 2012, he shot, wrote the script and starred in the pseudo-documentary television movie Stars of Cricklewood [22] , for which he was again awarded the BAFTA Television Award nomination as a director and screenwriter in the Best Comedy category [23] . In the same year, Peter took part in the second season of the news drama “The Hour ” [24] , playing the role of the head of the news department Randall Brown, suffering from OCD , for which he received another BAFTA nomination [18] .
In 2013, Capaldi embodied the images of Leonardo da Vinci in the documentary film “ Inside the Mind of Leonardo ” [25] and the chief editor of the British newspaper The Guardian Alan Rasbridge in the film “ Fifth Power ” [26] , and also played the role of a doctor of the World Health Organization in zombies horror " War of the worlds Z " [22] . In 2014, he tried on the image of another historical figure - Cardinal Richelieu in the first season of the adventure drama The Musketeers [27] and appeared in the family comedy Adventures of Paddington as Mr. Curry [22] . The actor returned to the role of the latter in the sequel about the adventures of a teddy bear, which was released in 2017 [28] .
Kapaldi voiced the character of the Rabbit in the Disney movie " Christopher Robin ", which premiered in 2018 [29] . At Christmas of the same year, he gave his voice to another animated hero - the Kehaaru seagull in a mini-series based on Richard Adams 's book “ Inhabitants of the Hills ” [30] . After that, the actor will take part in the adaptation of Charles Dickens ’s novel about David Copperfield , where he will play the role of Wilkins Mikober [31] . In early 2019, Peter starred in the video of his relative, singer Lewis Capaldi , for the song “Someone You Loved” [32] .
"Thick of Events"
Before getting the lead role in the Doctor Who series, Kapaldi was best known for playing the swearing senior press officer of Prime Minister Malcolm Tucker in the comedy television series " Event Center ", which he performed from 2005 to 2012 [20] . Tucker’s character is largely based on Tony Blair’s Alastair Campbell ’s right hand, although the actor himself claimed to have drawn inspiration from Hollywood producers such as Harvey Weinstein. [33] In 2009, based on the series, the spin-off “ In the Loop ” was released, in which Peter also returned to his role [20] . For her, he received a total of four BAFTA nominations, one of which he won in 2010 [18] .
Doctor Who
On August 4, 2013, it was announced that Kapaldi was chosen to be the twelfth incarnation of the Doctor in the cult British science fiction television series Doctor Who [34] [35] , where he first appeared in the Christmas special issue of the series on December 25, 2013, and also literally for a couple of seconds, in the commemorative episode " Doctor 's Day " on November 23, 2013. However, it is worth noting that for Peter this was not the first appearance in the Doctor Who universe: before, he played Cecilia in the second episode of season 4 of Pompeii 's Lights [36] and civil servant John Frobisher in season 3 of Torchwood [37] . Thus, he is one of two actors (the second is Colin Baker ) who, before playing the Doctor, appeared in the series in a different role. Capaldi, along with William Hartnell , who played the role of the First Doctor , is the oldest actor to play this character (not counting John Hurt ) (both were 55 at the time of their election to the role) [38] . Peter is a longtime fan of the show: as a teenager, he wrote several articles in the Radio Times magazine about the series [39] .
Kapaldi twice took the 1st place in the ranking of "Hot Hundred" of Scottish symbols in the field of culture according to the British media magazine The List : in 2009 as Malcolm Tucker and in 2014 already as the Twelfth Doctor [40] .
In July 2015, along with Jenna Coleman , Michelle Gomez and Stephen Moffat, presented the series at San Diego Comic-Con International [41] . In the same year, voiced his character in the computer game Lego Dimensions [42] . On the set of Doctor Who's season 9, the actor suffered the same knee injury as his predecessor, Matt Smith , due to the abundance of fast running around corridors with sharp turns [43] . In the fall of 2015, it became known that Kapaldi extended his contract for at least one more season [44] . In March of the following year, he confirmed that he had received an offer to stay on season 11 of the series and was considering this possibility [45] .
On March 19, 2016, a new world record was set at La Mole Comic Con in Mexico City for the largest number of Doctor Who cosplayers in one place. The event was attended by Peter Capaldi, who accepted the Guinness Book of Records certificate, as well as executive producer Brian Mincin [46] .
Peter again played the role of the Doctor in the opening series of the new spin-off series called " Class ", which premiered in October 2016 [47] .
On January 30, 2017, it was announced that season 10 would be the last for Peter Capaldi as Doctor. The final episode with his participation was the Christmas special issue of 2017 [48] . In July 2017, the actor again presented the series at San Diego Comic-Con International along with Pearl Mackie , Michelle Gomez, Matt Lucas , Stephen Moffat and Mark Gaitiss [49] .
Personal life
Since 1986, lives in London with actress and producer Elaine Collins, whom she met in the early 1980s [50] . In June 1991, the couple married in Strathbane , near Glasgow, and in August 1993 they had a daughter, Cecile. The family lives in Maswell Hill , a northern suburb of London [51] , and also has real estate in Lecrin , Granada , Spain [52] .
Peter Capaldi is the second cousin of the Scottish singer and musician Lewis Capaldi [53] .
