Career
Vladimir Petkovich began his career in the club “ Sarajevo ”, where he almost did not perform. From there he moved to Rudar , and then again to Sarajevo, with which he won the Yugoslav Championship . Then Petkovic went to the Koper Slovenian club, but after spending only one season there, the footballer returned to Sarajevo for the second time [3] .
With the beginning of ethnic tensions in a country that later turned into a war , Vladimir went to Switzerland . There he played for the first years in the clubs “ Coira ”, “ Sion ”, “ Martigny-Sports ”. Simultaneously with the football performances, Petkovic worked in a warehouse in Dzhubyasko [1] . Only after moving to Bellinzona in 1993, he stopped combining these two classes. After Bellinzons, Petkovic played for Locarno , Buoks and Malcantone .
While still a footballer, Petkovic led Bellinzona, and then coached Malcantone under the same conditions, with which he won the First League Championship in Switzerland in 2003, and a year later took 4th place in the Challenge League . In 2004, “Malcantone” due to financial problems was forced to unite with the club “ Lugano ” [3] . Petkovich was appointed head coach of the combined team, which took 8th place in the Challenge League. In 2005, Petkovic again led Bellinzona, with which he took second place in the Challenge League, which allowed him to participate in transitional matches for reaching the Super League , but there the club lost to Arau . In 2008, he led Bellinzon to the Swiss Cup final, where his team lost 1: 4 to Basel [4] . In the championship, the club again took second place and again lost in the playoffs, this time to St. Gallen . After this setback Petkovic was fired.
In 2008, he headed the Young Boys Club, whose leadership after the 5th round fired Martin Andermatt . The contract was signed for 2.5 years [4] . The coach immediately changed the placement of players by 3-4-3 and it brought success: the club took 2nd place in the championship and reached the Switzerland Cup final, where he lost to Sion. The following year, the coach took the second place in the championship for the second time in a row. In the season 2010/2011 the club was among the leaders, but after a draw with “ Lucerne ” at the very end of the championship was fired [5] . The results of the European Cup influenced the dismissal: in the Champions League the club lost to Tottenham at the preliminary stage, and in the Europa League at the 1/16 final stage - to Zenit .
In 2011, Petkovic led the Turkish club Samsunspor , where he worked less than six months and was dismissed in January after the club was in the “relegation zone” [6] . May 15, 2012 Petkovic became the acting head coach of Sion and had to lead the club until the end of the championship [7] . The club, deprived of UEFA 36 points in the championship due to offenses in the matches of the Europa League, was forced to participate in transitional matches. In them, the Petkovic club achieved victory over Aarau and retained a place in the Super League.
June 2, 2012 Petkovic became the head coach of the Italian “ Lazio ” [8] . On May 26, 2013, the club won the Italian Cup . On December 23, 2013, Petkovia signed a contract with the Swiss national team , which he headed in the summer of 2014 after the World Cup in Brazil . On January 4, 2014, Petkovic was dismissed from Lazio [9] .
Under the leadership of Vladimir Petkovich, the Swiss team for the first time in its history managed to leave the group at the European Championships .
