Story
The action begins with a dialogue between the Director and the Playwright. The director asks the playwright to tell him a story for his theater, and he begins, warning that the story will be complicated, and not yet fully developed - the details will be composed as the story goes.
The play has a pseudo-detective plot: a mysterious murder, of which nothing is known: neither the scene of the crime, nor the murder weapon, nor the victim (nor, in fact, whether it was). The protagonists of the play are the hero accused of this crime, also deprived of his name, surname and place of residence, his double and a certain supreme court - an abstract force in the power of which is the fate of all living. In the end, the hero, desperate to prove his innocence, suddenly becomes involved in this murder. The play has an open ending , leaving room for reflection [1] .
Features
“Double” is the author’s early play, where in the title itself he indicated interest in the theme of duality , which runs through all his work. Durenmatt doubles parodying each other are signs of what Bakhtin called the carnivalization of literature [2] . The implausibility, surrealism of action are emphasized; the author notes that everything happens "as if in a dream."
The play, gravitating towards tragedy , was written under some influence of the work of Franz Kafka and has some similarities with the novel “ The Process ” [3] . Its main theme is the inevitability and senselessness of human fate , a man who, under the pressure of some unnamed power, begins to believe in his original sinfulness [1] .
Performances in Russia
The play was staged three times in Russia [ where? ] . In 2012 , she was directed by Aida Khorosheva at the Cinema Theater in Moscow as part of the Open Stage project. The main roles were played by Alexey Znamensky and Maxim Tiunov [3] [4] . This performance was shown on the air of the television channel Theater. The performance was staged in minimalist scenery, the whole props are iron frames with black and white Roman curtains [3] . The main language of the performance is plastic, the replicas of the actors are voiced by a voice-over belonging to Yegor Sachkov, who plays the role of the Director [4] . Khorosheva, the director of the play, deliberately chose Cinematography for the production of this play, where hearing-impaired actors play [5] .
