Biography

Ardis Ankerson was born on the Philippine island of Negros in 1915. As a child, she moved to the United States with her family, where they settled in Texas . [1] Her acting debut took place in Hollywood in 1939, and a year later she played her first major role in the adventure melodrama Sea Hawk , starring Errol Flynn . In 1941, she again starred in the company with Flynn in the crime comedy Steps in the Dark . In the same year, after a divorce from her first husband, Richard Gaines, [2] Brenda Marshall married actor William Holden , who became the stepfather of her daughter Virginia from her first marriage, as well as the father of their own two sons.

After marriage, the actress began to act less often, appearing in subsequent years in only nine films, the most famous of which were “Captains of the Clouds” (1942), “Permanent Nymph” (1943), “Sources of Danger” (1943) and “ Strange Incarnation ” ( 1946). In 1950, she completed her film career, after which she only appeared on the screen once, playing herself (as Mrs. William Holden) in the popular sitcom " I Love Lucy " in 1955. The marriage with Holden was not particularly successful, since from the first years the couple often clashed. In later years, Marshall and Holden did not live together, and in 1971 they officially separated.

Brenda Marshall died of throat cancer on July 30, 1992 in Palm Springs at the age of 76.
