Geography
The reserve is located in the southern part of Iki-Burulsky district of Kalmykia . The key object of the reserve is the Chograisk reservoir . The main geological and geographical structure of the reserve's region is the Kumo-Manych depression , which in the southeast is adjacent to the Caspian lowland . The land part of the reserve is located in the subzone of the Black Sea dry fescue-field steppes.
Soil
The predominant soil type of the reserve is complexes of solonetz chestnut and light chestnut solonetzic loamy soils with varying degrees of participation in the structure of certain soils. Alluvial-lacustrine deposits have very limited distribution within a narrow valley-shaped form, articulating the modern Chograisk reservoir and Manych-Gudilo lake, where a little eastward flow may occur periodically during high humidity seasons. [2] .
Goals and objectives of the reserve
The reserve was created [1] to strengthen protection and create better conditions for the habitat of waterfowl and increase the number of firebird, pegans and rare birds: spoonbills , white herons , pelicans , as well as for the rational use of muskrat .
Tasks of the reserve [1] :
- preservation of natural complexes in a natural state;
- conservation, reproduction and restoration of natural resources: wild boar , fur animals , hare ;
- ensuring the established protection regime for rare species of animals and birds;
- maintaining environmental balance;
- assistance in conducting research work without violating the established regime of the reserve;
- propaganda among the population of the tasks of environmental protection, rational use and reproduction of natural resources.
Objects of protection
The Chograisky nature reserve is of inter-regional importance, since there is a migration route for birds of the wetland complex connecting Western Siberia and Kazakhstan with the Black Sea basin, the Near and Middle East , North and East Africa . Favorable conditions for the nesting day of waterfowl have been created on the territory of the reserve ( curly and pink pelican , spoonbill , black-headed laughter , geese , red-throated geese , etc.) [3] .
Indigenous steppe species breed in the ecotone zone: burial ground , white-tailed eagle , vulture , black vulture , bustard and strep , golden eagle , the number of which decreased due to anthropogenic impact on their habitats [3] .
Negative factors
- pollution of the water system, which leads to the loss of unique natural ecosystems and a reduction in biodiversity;
- flooding of settlements, salinization and desertification , removal of valuable land from economic turnover [3] .
