Shuja Shah was the governor of Herat and Peshawar from 1798 to 1801 . He proclaimed himself king of Afghanistan in October 1801 (after the removal of his brother Zeman Shah from power), but he only ascended the throne on July 13, 1803 .

In 1809, Shuja Shah entered into an alliance with Great Britain as a means of protection against the invasion of the Napoleonic forces and Russia .

On May 3, 1809, Shuja Shah was removed from power by his predecessor Mahmud Shah , and he was forced to go into exile in India , where he was captured by Yahanda Khan Bamizai in Attok (1811-12), and then in Kashmir (1812 -13). When the vizier of Mahmud Shah Fateh Khan invaded Kashmir, he decided to go with the army of the Sikhs . From 1813 to 1814 he was in Lahore . In exchange for his freedom, he handed over the Kohinur diamond to the Maharajas Ranit Singh. After that, he first remained in Punjab , and then in Ludhiana along with Zeman Shah .

In 1833, he entered into an agreement with Ranit Singh: he was allowed to go with his army through the Punjab. Thus, the following year, Shuja Shah went to Kandahar , and the Sikhs attacked Peshawar. In July, having not reached the walls of Kandahar, Shuja Shah stumbled upon the troops of Dost Muhammad and was defeated.

In 1838, he received the support of the British forces, as well as the army of the Sikhs of Maharaja in the elimination of the government of Dost Mohammed Khan. This became the cause of the First Anglo-Afghan War (1838-42). Shuja regained the throne on August 7, 1839 , [2] almost 30 years after his overthrow from the throne. He could not hold power for a long time and was killed by Shuja al-Daul on April 5, 1842 [3] .
