Biography

The Early Years and Early Careers (1986-2009)

Hanley was born at a military base in Wiesbaden on October 26, 1986 [2] . While in Germany , his parents decided to leave, and therefore his mother gave him a surname chosen at random. His father remained in the army, and Quincy and his mother moved to Texas , where they lived for two years, after which they settled in Los Angeles [3] . After graduating from Crenshaw High School, he changed several colleges. As a teenager, Hanley became a member of the Hoover Crips street gang and later began to sell drugs. In 2007, he was arrested for six months, spent half his term under house arrest [3] .

At the age of 16, Hanley composed the first rap couplet, but seriously took up music when he was 21 years old [4] . In 2006, he began working with the Los Angeles independent record label Top Dawg Entertainment, recording at his House of Pain studio and collaborating with company performers [4] . July 29, 2008 the first mixtape of rapper Schoolboy Turned Hustla was released . The contract with Top Dawg Entertainment was signed in 2009, and then Skulba Kew together with label colleagues Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul formed the Black Hippy band. The second mixtape Gangsta & Soul was released on May 14, 2009.

Independent Albums and Black Hippy (since 2010)

Although Hanley did not release any new records in 2010, he toured, recorded as a guest star and worked in the studio on the Black Hippy album and his own Setbacks CD. January 11, 2011 was the release of his debut album under the label Top Dawg Entertainment. Setbacks received positive reviews from critics; in the first week, 784 digital copies of the album were sold [5] , and it took 100th place in the Billboard magazine charts [6] .

Top Dawg released rapper Habits & Contradictions' second album on January 14, 2012. Weekly sales amounted to 3900 copies [7] , so the record entered the Billboard 200 chart , taking 111th place there [6] .
