Youth
Born December 14, 1913 in the village of Bor in a peasant family. Russian. Due to the early death of his father, he began to work as a subsistence and shepherd from 6 years old. He graduated from four classes of Borsk elementary school. I entered a junior high school in the neighboring village of Kolbeki , but I had to interrupt my studies because of the need to help my family. Then he moved to Pikalevo, Leningrad Region, where he began to work at the railway station , and in the evenings he studied at a working youth school .
In October 1930, he was called up for military service in the Red Army . He served in the 11th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Infantry Division of the Leningrad Military District . In the same place in 1932 he finished the training of reserve commanders. In October 1932 he was transferred to the reserve.
He returned to Boksitogorsk for family reasons. In 1934 he graduated from two courses of the A.I. Herzen Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute . He worked in the city of Boksitogorsk, Leningrad Region, at the Boksitogorsk Alumina Combine, as the head of the training department for personnel training.
In February 1936, he was re-drafted into the Red Army. He completed a short-term training course at the training center of the command staff of the Leningrad Military District. From May 1936 he served in the 72nd Infantry Division of the Kiev Military District : commander of a rifle company , from December 1937 - chief of staff of a rifle battalion , from October 1938 - adjutant senior rifle battalion. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1939. In January 1940 he was appointed commander of the battalion of the 218th Infantry Regiment of the 80th Infantry Division , which was sent to the front of the Soviet-Finnish War . The rank of senior lieutenant passed this war. Was injured. After the division returned to the place of permanent deployment, was transferred by the commander of the reconnaissance battalion of this regiment .
World War II
On the fronts of World War II from June 1941 in the same position as commander of a reconnaissance battalion. He fought in the 6th Army of the South-Western Front , a participant in the Lviv-Chernivtsi defensive operation . In early July 1941, he was seriously injured in battles in Ukraine, was treated for a month in a hospital in Mariupol . After being cured in August, he was appointed assistant to the head of the intelligence department of the 40th Army of the South-Western Front; in November 1941, he was commander of the 1032th Infantry Regiment of the 293rd Infantry Division of the 40th Army of the South-Western Front, a participant in the Barvenkovo-Lozovskoy offensive operation , January 1942 - deputy commander of the 22nd separate motorized rifle brigade , from June 1942 - commander of the 1075th rifle regiment of the 316th rifle division . He fought on the Stalingrad Front , in the Battle of Stalingrad in mid-September 1942 he was seriously injured a second time. Evacuated to the hospital in Barnaul .
He returned to duty only in February 1943, when he was appointed deputy commander for the combat unit of the 5th separate guards motorized rifle brigade of the 3rd Guards Army , after the death of her guard commander Colonel A. G. Bugaev in November 1943, he served as commander , and in May 1944 approved by the brigade commander. He fought in this brigade on the South-West , from October 1943 on the 4th Ukrainian , from February 1944 on the 3rd Ukrainian fronts. He successfully fought in the composition and at the head of the brigade in Voroshilovgrad , Donbass , Melitopol , Zaporizhzhya , Nikopol-Krivorozh , Bereznegovato-Snigirev , Odessa , Yass-Kishinev , Belgrade , Budapest, offensive operations, including during the liberation of the cities of Kramatorsk , Odessa Ishmael , Belgrade .
The 5th Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade [2], under the command of the Guard Lieutenant Colonel N. I. 3yavialov, freed the villages of Tarutino and Tatarbunary on the territory of the Odessa Region, penetrated deep behind enemy lines during the Iasi-Kishinev strategic offensive operation from August 20 to 26, 1944 . In this operation, soldiers under the command of Lieutenant Colonel N. I. Zavyalov burned 10 tanks, shot down 45 guns, more than 100 vehicles, destroyed up to 3,000 and captured 300 enemy soldiers and officers.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of September 13, 1944, for the able command of the brigade and the courage and heroism of the guard shown, Lieutenant Colonel Nikolai Ivanovich Zavyalov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal (No. 3492).
For outstanding military merits, the brigade under the command of N. I. Zavyalov was awarded the orders of Suvorov and Kutuzov 2nd degree. In November 1944, she was reorganized into the 32nd Guards Mechanized Brigade [3] . Guard Colonel Zavyalov remained its commander [4] .
In a battle on January 14, 1945 in Hungary he was seriously wounded for the third time. He was treated in Moscow, in the clinic named after N.V. Sklifosovsky . He was discharged from the hospital after the Victory.
Post-War Service
After the war, he continued to serve in the Soviet Army . Since July 1945, he commanded the 15th Guards Mechanized Regiment of the 4th Guards Mechanized Division , from February 1946 - the 5th Guards Mechanized Regiment of the 2nd Guards Mechanized Division (both regiments were part of the Southern Group of Forces ). In 1948 he graduated from the Higher Academic Courses at the Military Academy of the Armored and Mechanized Forces of the Soviet Army named after I.V. Stalin . Since November 1948, he commanded the 99th Guards Mechanized Regiment of the 31st Guards Mechanized Division of the 4th Guards Tank Army of the Group of Soviet Occupation Troops in Germany . Since February 1951, he was the chief of staff of the 26th mechanized division in the Transcaucasian Military District , and since June 1952, he was the chief of staff of the 8th Guards Tank Division of the 5th Guards Tank Army in the Belorussian Military District . From October 1953 to November 1956 he commanded the 70th Guards Mechanized Division . In 1957 he graduated from the K.E. Voroshilov Military Academy . Since March 1958 - commander of the 24th Samar-Ulyanovsk Berdychiv three times Red Banner Orders of Suvorov and Bogdan Khmelnitsky of the Iron Motorized Rifle Division in the Carpathian Military District . Since September 1960 - Deputy Commander for Combat Training - Head of the Combat Training Division of the 13th Combined Arms Army of the Carpathian Military District. Since December 1964 - in the same position in the 8th Guards Army of the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany . In December 1969, retired.
He lived in Kiev. The author of memoirs. He died on March 26, 1989. He was buried in the Baykovsky cemetery (plot number 52).
