Biography and Creativity
His father was the chief judge in Copenhagen, Peter Christian Bagger (died 1810) from a noble family, and his mother worked in a store in Vesterbro, Copenhagen .
Before his death, his father decided to give him his name and the rights of a legitimate child, and also appointed his brother's guardian over him. But the guardian, as a naval officer, died a few years later, and a 7-year-old boy began to live in his grandmother's house on the paternal side, where the elders treated him with neglect and violence.
At the age of 15 in 1822 he began studying at the Soro Academy. Here he soon became known for his playful antics and sharp mind. At the academy, he met Hans Christian Andersen , despite his very different natures, their friendship was for life.
His fiction novel Min Broders Levneted (The Life of My Brother. The Story of Johannes Harring), which he released in 1835 under the pseudonym Johannes Harring, and which partially depicts his own life, is famous. The novel attracted universal attention with naturalistic descriptions of the life of urban bohemia [1] . In addition, he owns the tragedy of “Queen Christina” (1833) and 4 volumes of poems and short stories (1834–35–36–1845). A collection of his works (Samlede Vaerker) was published in Copenhagen in 1865–66.
He was buried in the cemetery in Odense.
