History

Wooden house at 293 East Street, 203

Initially, the site was a small bay of the East River . It was located between the current 32nd and 37th streets. The coastline of the bay ran along current 1st Avenue. It got its name from the name of the Dutch colonist Jacobus Hendrickson Kip ( niderl. Jacobus Hendrickson Kip , 1631—1690), whose farm was located north of 30th street along the East River Strait [3] . Subsequently, the bay was drained , and the quarter broken in its place received the same name.

In 1655, at a place where Second Avenue and East 35th Street now intersect, Kip built a massive brick-stone house. He repeatedly expanded and stood until 1851 [4] . At the time of the demolition, he was the only farm house left over from the time of New Amsterdam .

On September 15, 1776, during a campaign in New York and New Jersey in the Bay of Kips Bay, 4,000 British soldiers landed under the leadership of General William Howe . They inflicted a serious defeat on the 500 American infantry that opposed them, who were forced to retreat. Soon after, the British occupied New York.

In 1878 and 1880, respectively, along the Third and Second Avenues, elevated railway lines were drawn. In the course of their construction, many old houses were demolished, and apartment buildings occupied their places [5] . The only building left in the area since that time is a private wooden house at 293 East Street. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places of the USA .

South of Kips Bay on the East River, there was once a wealthy estate of 39 acres [4] [6] . In 1835, it was acquired by the mine owner [7] . In the 1860s, frontal buildings were erected on this site. Between the 23rd and 27th streets there was a large meat market, later it moved north of 42nd Street [8] .

In the 1960s, four high-rise residential complexes were erected on 29 East Street between First and Second Avenue south of East 27th Street [9] [10] . In 1963, according to the project of architect Bey Yuming , a large residential complex with 1,112 apartments was erected in the quarter [1] . In 1965 [5] , a strip mall "Kips-Bey Plaza" was built on Second Avenue between 30th and 32nd streets. It houses the cinema company , fitness club , round-the-clock pharmacy Rite Aid and other establishments [11] .

A residential complex of and the erected on the East River between 25th and 28th streets. In the 1980s, in addition to them, additional residential and office complexes and a hotel were planned to be built on the shore, but the project was rejected by the public council and the environmental commission [12] .

The buildings of New York University are located along First Avenue in the block: Tisha Hospital, , , , , and Manhattan Hospital. On the same avenue between the eastern 37th and 38th streets was located the Kips-Bay brewery founded in 1895. Now this building is reserved for office space [13] .

Population

As of 2009, the population of the quarter was 8933 inhabitants. The average population density was about 35,900 people / km², exceeding the average population density in New York by almost 3.5 times. In the racial ratio, the majority were whites. The average household income was almost 1.5 times higher than the city average: $ 87,939 [14] .
