Carl Mead was born November 16, 1950 at the Chenut, Illinois air base. He graduated from high school at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas in 1968. His father, Joseph Mead, lives in Universal City, Texas . His mother, Esther J. Mead, has died. Wife - Cheryl Ann Routh, they have two sons. He is fond of: wood carving, aircraft modeling, badminton, jogging, water and winter skiing. He was awarded a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering when he graduated from the University of Texas (Austin) in May 1973. Upon graduation from the California Institute of Technology in 1975, she was awarded a master 's degree in science, also in the field of electrical engineering [1] .

Before NASA

Prior to his active military service in the United States Air Force, from 1973 to 1975 he worked as a research fellow at Hughes Aircraft , a large US military-industrial aircraft company in Culver City , California . He began serving in the US Air Force at Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas , where he was the best graduate of the Pilot Training School. In 1977 he was transferred to the Shaw Air Base, South Carolina , where he flew on various modifications of the F-4 aircraft. He was then selected to study at the US Air Force School. At the end, he was noted as the best test pilot and was assigned to Edwards Air Force Base in California . Despite the fact that he was engaged in research work on the development and assessment of the flight qualities of various modifications of the F-5E and F-20 aircraft, he was also engaged in ground-based and air-launched cruise missiles. He experienced the reliability, maneuverability and flight qualities of airplanes with fast speeding, emergency braking, and various weapons systems. He tested the aircraft F-16, F-16A and F-16C . In 1985, at the US Air Force Test Pilot School, he became an instructor on the F-4 , A-7 Corsair II and A-37 , as well as on various gliders. It has a flight time of more than 4800 hours on 27 different types of aircraft [2] .

Space Flight Training

In June 1985, he was enrolled in the NASA astronaut squad as part of the 11th set as a flight specialist. He took an OKP course since August 1985. Upon completion in July 1986, he received the qualification of a flight specialist and was appointed to the NASA Astronaut Department.

Space Flight

  • The first flight is STS-38 [3] , the Atlantis shuttle . From November 15 to November 20, 1990 as a “flight specialist”. The flight was conducted in the interests of the US Department of Defense . The flight duration was 4 days 21 hours 55 minutes [4] .
  • The second flight - STS-50 [5] , the shuttle Columbia . From June 25 to July 9, 1992 as a "commander of the ship." The purpose of the flight is to conduct various physical and biomedical experiments. The studies were carried out in the laboratory “ SpaceSlab ” module in the cargo compartment of the ship. The flight duration was 13 days 19 hours 31 minutes (the longest shuttle flight at that time) [6] .
  • The third flight - STS-64 [7] , the Shuttle Discovery . From September 9 to September 20, 1994 as a flight specialist. The mission included carrying out experiments of different directions, in particular, the LITE experiment on flight tests of the lidar , experiments with the returning Spartan 201 satellite equipped with astronomical equipment, testing the astronaut’s autonomous moving means, the SPIFEX experiment on studying the exhaust of shuttle orientation engines [8 ] . He made one spacewalk: September 19, 1994, lasting 6 hours 51 minutes, of which 3 hours 35 minutes he tested a jetpack for an autonomous flight of an astronaut . The flight duration was 10 days 22 hours 51 minutes [9] .

The total duration of space flights is 29 days 16 hours 17 minutes.

After flying

In March 1996, he left the astronaut squad and NASA . Since March 1996, he worked at Lockheed Martin as deputy project manager for the creation of the X-33 .

Awards and Prizes

Awarded: Medal "For Space Flight" (1990, 1992 and 1994), Cross of Merit of Merit (USA) , Medal "For Excellent Service" (USA) , Medal "For Exceptional Merit" and many others.
