International Day of the Girl Child - a holiday celebrated on October 11 , proclaimed by the UN in 2012. The purpose of celebrating this day is to pay attention to social problems and inequalities experienced by girls around the world, directly related to the attitude of the surrounding society towards the female sex. These include educational opportunities, nutrition , health care, social rights, protection against discrimination , violence and forced marriage in childhood.
The initiative to adopt a resolution on the introduction of International Girls' Day was put forward by Canada at the UN General Assembly . The promotion of the resolution was carried out by the Canadian Minister for Women's Affairs, Rona Ambrose . On December 10, 2011, the UN General Assembly held a vote on the adoption of International Girls Day, starting on October 11, 2012 [1] .
