Biography
Fyodor Garkusha was born on February 17, 1920 in the village of Pavlovka (now the Vasilkovsky district of the Dnipropetrovsk region of Ukraine ) in a peasant family. He graduated from seven classes of the school, after which he worked as a combine operator in a machine and tractor station. In 1938, Garkush was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army . In 1941, he graduated from the Minsk Cavalry School. Since June of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. By July 1943, Lieutenant Fyodor Garkusha commanded a horse reconnaissance platoon of the 224th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 72nd Guards Rifle Division of the 7th Guards Army of the Steppe Front . He distinguished himself during the battle of Kursk [1] .
At the beginning of July 1943, Garkusha, leading a group of 5 people, repelled the enemy’s attempt to capture the command post of the regiment. In August, acting in separate groups, the platoon of Garkushi captured the dominant heights, captured 4 heavy and 15 light machine guns , and also destroyed several dozen enemy soldiers and officers [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of February 22, 1944 for "exemplary performance of command missions at the front of the battle against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown" of the guard, Lieutenant Fyodor Garkusha was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Gold medal Star ” under number 1434 [1] .
In 1946, Garkusha was sacked. He lived in the village of Vasilkovka, Dnipropetrovsk region, until 1976 he worked at the mill. He died on February 6, 1996, and was buried in Vasilkovka [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Patriotic War of the 1st degree and a number of medals [1] .
