The parliamentary elections in Lithuania of 1936 took place on June 10 . [1] The nomination and voting took place in accordance with the new election law, approved by decree of President A. Smeatony . [2]
Only district and city councils could nominate candidates, while the number of nominated candidates should have corresponded to the number of mandates in the district. [1] The number of the Seimas was reduced from 85 to 49 deputies. [3] [4] All political parties were banned, except for the Union of Lithuanian Nationalists (Tautininki) and its allies. [2] Nationalists took 42 seats in the Sejm, the remaining seven mandates went to the youth branch of the union, the Young Lithuania organization ( lit. Jaunoji Lietuva ). [5] On February 11, 1938, the Fourth Seimas adopted a new constitution, which strengthened the authoritarian regime of A. Smetona. According to the new constitution, the powers of the parliament were significantly reduced, and the powers of the president, on the contrary, were expanded [1]
