A shiny black cylindrical body, consisting of 41-56 segments [2] , about 100 pairs of white legs [3] . Length - 15–39 mm and up to 49 mm. Lives in forest litter , under the bark, in moss. It feeds on algae, detritus , [3] , sometimes the fruits of plants, such as raspberries [2] . Other millipedes feed on T. niger itself - the drupes Lithobius variegatus and drupes [3] , as well as hedgehogs [4] .

Most active in the period from one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise, although in the summer it often exhibits significant activity in the afternoon [5] . Like many other two-legged ones , the disturbed T. niger coils into a spiral with its legs inward, hiding its head in the center [2] , but can also run away in a lateral undulating course [6] .
