Botanical Description

These families are represented mainly by herbaceous plants, less often woody vines, shrubs, and even small trees. Xylem always contains vessels, usually with simple and very rarely with ladder perforation plates. Leaves are usually alternate, without stipules.

The flowers are entomophilous or even ornithophilic, less often anemophilic. Flowers are usually bisexual, less often unisexual, spiral, hemicyclic or cyclic, pentameric, trimeric, dimeric and very rarely monomeric. Perianth simple or double, actinomorphic or less zygomorphic. The petals at the base are often with nectaries or a pair of nectaries, loose or rarely fused. Sometimes flowers without perianth.

Notes

  1. ↑ For the conventionality of specifying the class of dicotyledons as a superior taxon for the plant group described in this article, see the APG Systems section of the Dicotyledonous article .
