Mangla Dam is an active hydropower plant in the Free State of Jammu and Kashmir (operated by Pakistan ) on the Jelam River. The construction of the hydropower plant began in 1961 , the completion of the construction took place in 1967 .

General information
On December 1, 1967, Pakistani President Muhammad Ayyub Khan arrived in Azad Kashmir to personally attend the opening of the hydroelectric station in the city of Mangle . The construction of the facility cost $ 2 billion. The hydropower plant has become one of the largest irrigation systems in the world, delivering water to 30 million acres of land and 50 million people who live near the vast Indus river basin .
On December 5, 1971, the Indian Air Force launched a missile strike on the dam during the Third Indo-Pakistani War . As a result of the attack, the hydroelectric station in Mangle received serious damage.
