Biography
Tedeschi worked as a consultant on the industrial and financial strategy of the French information company Sema-Metra from 1973 to 1984. In 1985, he began working for the financial company Procomin Imi-BNL, then moved to Sogei, where he met Massimo Varazzani, the general director of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) and beginning banker Janmario Roveraro (a member of Opus Dei , killed in 2006). .), as well as with Giuseppe Garofano , a member of Opus Dei, co-owner and director of Montedison SpA, one of the largest industrial companies in Italy [1] In 1990, he participated in the placement of shares of the Italian food corporation Parmalat on the stock exchange, as a result of which he participated in negotiations on the acquisition of Federconsorzi in 1991 Simultaneously He became a member of the Board of Directors of the Parmalat Group.
In 1992, with the participation of Janmario Roveraro as a financier, Tedeschi was involved in the preparation of the acquisition of Akros Finanziaria, initiated by Emilio Botin, closely associated with the Spanish group Santander. Akros Group accumulated about 275 billion euros, and in 1993 Tedeschi was appointed president of the Italian division of Finconsumo Banca SpA (later Santander Consumer Bank SpA), after which he headed the Italian operations of a Spanish bank [2] [3]
From 1996 to 2006 Tedeschi taught financial strategy at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore) in Milan, and later on business ethics at the University of Turin . He was also the President of the Board of Trustees and a member of the Tocqueville-Acton Center Studi e Ricerche Training and Research Center (Tocqueville-Acton Center Studi e Ricerche), he collaborated in periodicals ( “L'Osservatore Romano” and “Il Sole 24 Ore” ) [4] . In addition, Tedeschi holds positions in a number of financial institutions.
Economic and religious views
| An economy is a technique, advanced and complex, but neutral, which, in order to be useful for a person, must agree to regard it as something important, standing in the center. [...] Capitalism has undoubtedly done a lot for man and can do even more, but in order for people not to be subject to restrictions in the global world, they must be “strong” and formed. Ettore Gotti Tedeschi. "Moral capitalism." Fondazione liberal [5] |
Catholic and liberal, Ettore Gotti Tedeschi wrote with Reno Cummiller a book titled Money and Paradise. The global economy and the Catholic world "( Denaro e Paradiso. L'economia globale e il mondo cattolico ), in which the authors argued that" the superiority of capitalism is inspired by Christian morality. "
Contrary to Keynesian theory and the idea that economics is a “pure” science, the book is based on the teachings of medieval economists Giovanni Ceccarelli and Giacomo Todeschini, who concluded that capitalism was born “in order to elevate human dignity” [6] , in accordance with the theory of Franciscan theologians Italy of the XIII century [4] , and that, on the contrary, Protestantism is responsible for such evils of the system of private enterprise, such as speculation, voluntarism, “wild capitalism”, the right of the strong [4] . Today, according to Gotti Tedeschi, the emancipation of the economy from Catholic morality led to “economic Maccabiarelism”, which was sacrificed by a man for power and profit and, consequently, to the hostility of the Catholic world to the liberal market and capitalism. Hostility failed, according to the authors of the book “Money and Paradise,” thanks to the encyclical “Centesimus Annus” by Pope John Paul II , for which “Pope Karol Wojtyla should have been nominated for the Nobel Prize in economics and not for his other discounted achievements” [6 ] .
Investigation
In relation to Tedeschi, an investigation was conducted on suspicion of money laundering in 2010, and in May 2012 he was dismissed from the post of President of the Institute of Religious Affairs, which he had held since 2009, according to a vote of no-confidence vote in the Board of Directors. German Ronaldo Hermann Schmitz was elected interim president [7] [8] .
On June 5, 2012, the house of Tedeschi in Piacenza, Italy, was searched simultaneously with two offices in Milan [9] . Investigators in Rome stated that the searches were related to the investigation of allegations of bribes by high-ranking Indian officials in the preparation of a contract for the supply of helicopters, as well as in Panama, in obtaining contracts for the supply of security systems for the new Panama Canal by the Finmeccanica group, run by a close friend of Tedeschi - Giuseppe Orsi [10] .
As a result of the raid, the police found 47 folders, which Tedeschi marked as materials with compromising information about the Vatican “in case anything happens to him.” Some documents were titled "Internal enemies" and contained the names of politicians and influential church hierarchs. The banker was forced to cooperate with the Italian legal authorities out of fear for his life, which follows from the contents of several of his intercepted telephone conversations [11] .
The archive is an annotated chronology of events that the banker participated in since 2009, when he became president of the IOR, until the end of May 2012, when he was fired. Among the documents and e-mails appearing there is a correspondence between the Tedeschi and His Holiness, Pope Ratzinger [12], seized by the prosecutor of Naples and transmitted to the prosecutor of Rome [12] .
The Holy See responded to the incident by stating that its sovereignty should be recognized and respected by the Italian legal authorities, and that the documents should be returned to the Vatican [13] [14] .
Legal Rehabilitation
On February 19, 2014, the investigation against Tedeschi was discontinued, and the order to terminate the investigation contains a statement that Tedeschi not only has no relation to 23 million euros of IOR confiscated by the court in 2010 on suspicion of violation by the bank of anti-money laundering provisions, but on the contrary, the activity of the banker at this financial institution was aimed at bringing the Vatican closer to international standards of financial transparency. After that, Tedeschi appealed to the Rome Criminal Court (Tribunale Penale di Roma) with a charge against the IOR Board of Directors for his unlawful dismissal [15] .
Charge against the Pope
On September 23, 2017 he became one of 40 initiators of an appeal published on the Internet accusing Pope Francis of heresy on seven points on the basis of the content of the post-synodal Apostolic Epistle Amoris laetitia (62 people signed the appeal, including no cardinal or bishop) [16] . On September 25, reports appeared about blocking the website www.correctiofilialis.org, created specifically for the publication of the above-mentioned appeal, on the territory of the Vatican [17] .
Personal life
Tedeski's wife's name is Francesca, the couple have five children - Riccardo, Corrado, Daria, Federico, Laura. All children speak at least three languages, and some - at four, as their father [18] .
