The show, created by Susan Harris , was a parody of soap operas and included elements of melodrama, including the abduction of heroes by aliens, obsession with demons, murder and kidnapping. In 2007, Time magazine named the series "One of the One Hundred Best TV Shows of All Time" [1] .
Years after its completion, the series is often called one of the best shows in the history of television [2] [3] [4] . In total, the project was nominated seventeen times for the Emmy Award, winning four awards [5] . Katherine Helmond in 1981 won the Golden Globe Award for her work in the series, and the project itself was also nominated for an award [5] .
Even before its premiere, the series caused controversy from local partner stations ABC , who refused to broadcast shows about sex, infidelity and homosexuality [6] . Los Angeles Roman Catholic Church condemned the series and urged viewers to boycott it [7] , as well as a number of other religious fanatics who called the show obscene and undeserving of going on a block with two of the seventies' top-rated family shows, Happy Days and Laverna and Shirley [8] [9] . Ultimately, thirty-two thousand inhabitants of the country signed a petition for the premiere of the show, but the channel still showed it [10] . In addition to religious protests, the ABC faced criticism from the National Gay and Lesbian Working Group , who were unhappy with the image of a gay character in the show, one of the first LGBT heroes on television. [11] As a result, the ABC had to reduce the cost of thirty seconds of advertising time from 75 thousand to 40 [10] , and 18 of the 195 local partner stations did not show the premiere of the series on September 13, 1977 [6] .
