Vikramashila is a Buddhist university in Magadha during the Pala Dynasty, the religious and educational center of medieval India.
Description
It existed during the VIII-XII centuries. Located near the city of Bhagalpur in the state of Bihar , Republic of India. Was under the patronage of the rulers of the region. Covers an area of 0.14 km². It consisted of seven monasteries, 6 temples and a library, which totaled over nine million books. He enjoyed popularity among young people and scientists of India, China and Persia.
In 1193, it was plundered by Muslim Turks under the leadership of Bakhtiyar Khilji , which led to the final decline of Buddhism in India.
